1700 is reasonable on this deck too. If you someone scores a thousand.

No point scoring 700 if you want to win the game. Time is the key to this match. Unless Notch has one of his spells there isn't a bowler on either side who can run through a side quick enough to justify batting long enough to score 700, a score which history tells us is rarely reached.

More likely to do it after positing 700 and them batting on day 5, you would hope the pitch breaks up a bit.

If they post 700 I will give you one of Twatto's nut protectors autographed by the great pea heart himself.

It is our only chance of winning. I see zero sense in getting 500 and then having to chase 200 on a wearing pitch where we have only 3 blokes that can play spin! Better to try and bat once, get 650-700 (so say a 150-200 lead) then roll them and then if you have to chase 100 or so at most you can do that easily.

I'm not saying it would happen, but it is perfectly reasonable to take the time to score 700 and still have a shot at winning.
Took us 145 overs (or a day and a half) to get through them (ok, only 9 down). You'd think on a last day pitch, even an absolute road might offer SOMETHING to the bowlers?

We bat for another 145 overs @ 3.5 an over = 507 more (or 620 altogether). A bit of quick hitting somewhere along the way could conceivable see the 700 raised.
Then there is still a day and a half to bowl them out (for 246...)

I agree with you that 700 is extraordinarily unlikely (especially with 113 on the board) - but the time is theoretically there.

You want a minimum of 100 overs to bowl a side out. On a pitch that is showing no signs of deteriorating with an attack that has no potency and against a side that has batsmen willing to bat with patience you'll need more.

To have those 100 overs you need to declare on the 4th day with about an hour left in the day. That gives Australia 170 overs at 3.5 runs an over. As Richie once said 'not impossible but pretty f**king close to it'.

If Warner bats for most or at least half of day 3 we can easily get the total. It is our only chance of winning. Giving yourself 110 overs would be ideal having made 700 isn.

All I want to see in the immediate future (day 3) is running down their total with only 3 wickets down tops at days end
