Not being a Brisbane local myself, what do you think the problem is that the Gabba's struggling to even get people turning up on a weekend?
I think it has a lot to do with how high the prices are. A concession ticket for me yesterday was $75. Just easier to watch at home.

The characters of the game were killed off years ago. No way would Lillee/Marsh/Walters/Chappell brothers/Border/Hughes/Matthews etc. last in the game today. The PC brigade would make sure their career was killed off

Or maybe the game has changed and players are both more focused, as professional cricketers, and more aware of the importance of public perception? Especially in the wake of having our captain and vice captain banned for blatant cheating...

Yeah that's one of the big changes in public perception. Seems to me that quite often a lot of what people seem to mean when they say they miss the "characters" really boils down to "I miss the players I could relate to because they smoked darts and got on the piss like me."

Back then everyone just about smoked and drinking lots of beers was tough and manly and whatever. Now there's a lot more understanding of the dangers around both and the adverse affects they can have on preparation and fitness in athletes and we don't want our elite cricketers snapped pissed as a fart with a durrie in their mouth during a test series.
