Or maybe the game has changed and players are both more focused, as professional cricketers, and more aware of the importance of public perception? Especially in the wake of having our captain and vice captain banned for blatant cheating...
More focused, more professional, and yet... nowhere near as good.

Oh dear, how embarrassing.

Well that's subjective and encompasses a massive array of different factors, so not really relevant to the idea of "characters".

I'd suggest the English sides of the 80s would sacrifice the newborn Adam Lyth for Broad and Anderson...

We'd also sacrifice every baby boomer for a couple of test standard batsman.

I'd rather not derail the thread too much, especially when Mr Boomer himself arrives, but I think most of us agree that conditions play a huge part in the deficiencies of modern batsmen.

If you're raised on one style of deck and basically never see anything else until you play your first overseas test match then you will struggle generally. And with decks all over the world flattening out as a standard it becomes even more true.

Professionalism has brought good and bad, and part of the bad is increased money in the game leading to sponsors and broadcasters wanting every test to last five days, result or not.

Did you guys know that Warnie got 99 one day, and got caught off what should have been a no ball ?
Tell you what was a humbling moment for Warnie?

On the first day of the test match, Allan Border asked Warne in commentary how many times he got dropped from the team during his test career. Warne replied twice, 5th test vs India 1992 and first test of the 92/93 test series vs Windies at Brisbane before he went on a long rant about how Border and the selectors thought it was a big mistake to leave Warne out of the team when Australia narrowly failed to bowl the Windies out, he got rushed back into the side to bowl Richie Richardson with a flipper, take 7/52 in the Boxing Day test match and cement his position in the side forever.

Border replied "Hang on, what about the '99 tour of West Indies?" (Border was one of the selectors on that tour) and Warne sheepishly replied "yeah, that one too". The look on Warne's face was priceless, especially when Border went on to mention how the best of players can get dropped. Warney was clearly hoping no one was going to mention that '99 tour. Still hasn't forgotten about it.

Do they really need to show that guy throwing a tantrum when Warne was out for 99 every single test? it's old now
