1st Test: New Zealand v Australia at Wellington March 19-23 2010

lol, you guys play favourites just as much as the selectors do. Australia were 4/170 odd, had North and/or Clarke fallen cheaply then we may have struggled to get 300.

Yet only one of those players will get any praise.

Actually I quite like North
But in his previous 10 test innings he had only scored 220 odd runs.
And he had failed at all levels of the game this summer
Most other batsmen, with a similar level of international experience, would have been dropped well before this test match.

That pretty much nails it right there, the double standards in this team are astounding.

McCullum looks like he will play shots which is good for us, a cahance of a wicket and good to watch.

Jeez our test side is so dire. I don't even know where to start. There hasn't even been one performance to put a positive spin on things

btw, loving Allan Border's commentary. A nice change from the channel 9 clowns

Gees NZ have an ordinary team, really missing Jesse Ryder IMO. There just doesn't seem like there's much depth in NZ cricket atm

The good thing about batting against Australia is that THEY show you very quickly where your technical deficiencies are. If they find a fault, they are relentless and will show you up. To me, a player with good mental fortitude should be able to go away and work on their faults. Guptill, clearly an issue driving in the air, Watling, struggles to the fuller in swinger from a left armer needs to play it straighter, Taylor in the shorter game relies too much on playing badmington strokes to backward square leg...

These sorts of things can be rectified.

The main issue though is the bowling. Viagara is great for impotence, but there is nothing for bowling impotence. New Zealand need to take some punts here, a bloke like Chris Martin is of no use in big match test match cricket. Does a decent job against the also rans, but against the top quality bats he is a medium pacer who bowls the same delivery and becomes monotonous. Still, they can learn from the Australians, what I found with New Zealand is our bowlers are skiddy, they offer up a lot of balls to be driven. The Australian bowlers hit the pitch and get bounce, so if you want to drive you are hitting high on the bat/edge giving chances.

One positive, a gutsy knock from McIntosh, hopefully he is giving himself the confidence to suggest he can bat long periods against quality opposition attacks.

Just listened to Doug Bollinger get interviewed on the radio after play was called off.
Sounds like a decent chap who is pretty level-headed an loves his cricket. Wish we could have one of them playing for NZ.

Completely agree here, one problem though...our bowling coaches suck.
In NZ cricket we have had two successful bowlers...ever.

Unless we can get a bowling coach of international standing we will never do well against the top teams.

How much International cricket did Dayle Hadlee and Mark O'Donnell ever play?
I mean really

Hadlee played 26 tests and 11 ODIs, his career was riddled with injury. He's since gone onto being appointed to a high profile position within the ICC Development ranks.

I see styles of bowlers as being a lagging indicator of our pitches. During the 90s and into the 2000s (early period), we brought up green nurseries which aided swingers who could trundle in at 130 and hit full of a good length and nip it about. I hope the fact we now have good batting wickets going around we start to see the need for bounce being articulated amongst our bowling ranks.

Bollinger pick of the Bowlers for Aus but Harris and Johnson have complemented him well. Kiwis just don't have the mindset for test cricket IMO, also team selections are questionable.

Sorry, I disagree - the main problem is always our batting - seriously, that is not a 150 pitch against any bowling attack - our batting lineup is feeble, and aside from a stubborn effort from McIntosh we'd have been beaten already...

Watling and McIntosh are honest but only have ordinary first class records. Ingram has an ordinary record too, despite a few good years. Guptill is talented but has an abysmal first class record, and some rather obvious technical flaws... Taylor is no doubt talented, but I suspect the sh*t my dog just did on the lawn has a higher IQ... Ryder is a big loss etc etc...

we had Aust in trouble and couldn't finish them off, but we're not the first team to do that. We've also just lost Bond and O'Brien - and yes Bond has hardly played a test, but that coupled with Oram and Franklin's injuries (he actually looked a good test bowler aside from a couple of poor efforts against Aust... picking an extra bowler and having a short batting lineup was stupid

End of the day, we are a rubbish test team, but i'd start by looking at the batting lineup that can never put together an innings of substance - even against Bangladesh they were rescued by the lower order
