The good thing about batting against Australia is that THEY show you very quickly where your technical deficiencies are. If they find a fault, they are relentless and will show you up. To me, a player with good mental fortitude should be able to go away and work on their faults. Guptill, clearly an issue driving in the air, Watling, struggles to the fuller in swinger from a left armer needs to play it straighter, Taylor in the shorter game relies too much on playing badmington strokes to backward square leg...
These sorts of things can be rectified.
The main issue though is the bowling. Viagara is great for impotence, but there is nothing for bowling impotence. New Zealand need to take some punts here, a bloke like Chris Martin is of no use in big match test match cricket. Does a decent job against the also rans, but against the top quality bats he is a medium pacer who bowls the same delivery and becomes monotonous. Still, they can learn from the Australians, what I found with New Zealand is our bowlers are skiddy, they offer up a lot of balls to be driven. The Australian bowlers hit the pitch and get bounce, so if you want to drive you are hitting high on the bat/edge giving chances.
One positive, a gutsy knock from McIntosh, hopefully he is giving himself the confidence to suggest he can bat long periods against quality opposition attacks.
