1st Test: Sri Lanka v Australia @ Galle Jan 29 - Feb 2, 2025

Matthew Kuhnemann and Todd Murphy are set to be picked in Australia’s Test squad for the tour of Sri Lanka, while Nathan McSweeney will reportedly be recalled.

That is according to Code Sports, which reports that selectors will on Thursday name a squad that includes at least three frontline spinners in Nathan Lyon, Kuhnemann and Murphy, while McSweeney is in line to return.

A report by Sydney Morning Herald adds that Mitchell Marsh will not make the tour, having been dropped for Beau Webster in Sydney.

Both Murphy and Kuhnemann played with Lyon in three Tests during the tour of India in 2023.

Murphy sensationally look 7-124 in his debut innings while he was also part of that year’s Ashes series, taking his Test numbers to 21 wickets at 25.42.

Kuhnemann only has under his belt that series in India, where he struggled to break through either side of a stunning 5-16 in Indore.

Kuhnemann was called-up to be around Australia’s Test squad in Sydney along with Murphy and Peter Handscomb, who is firming for his own re-call.

Cooper Connolly is another name who has firmed in selection talks with the young left-armer a strong chance to be included in the squad.

The 21-year-old all-rounder has shown impressive form with the bat in the Big Bash this summer, and offers left-arm orthodox spin. While selection in Australia’s XI may be out of reach, it’s thought that the tour is a strong opportunity for the young gun to have more exposure to the international set-up and aid the nation’s succession planning.

It’s unclear if his potential selection would come at the expense of Glenn Maxwell, who is still without a Test appearance since 2017’s tour of Bangladesh.

Maxwell has made no secret of his desire to return to the Test arena, but hasn’t played a first class match since July 2023.

Meanwhile, the return of McSweeney adds extra intrigue around Australia’s opener dilemma heading into the series.

McSweeney was dropped after three Tests against India this summer with Sam Konstas taking his place.

Konstas’ first two Tests excited, but failed to make him a long-term lock. Usman Khawaja, meanwhile, has been out of form, but has become one of Australia’s strongest players of spin.

Making the situation more complex is the potential for Travis Head to move up the order, as he did in India in 2023, and leave a vacancy in the middle-order instead.

Good move picking 3 spinners for this tour

Probably play 2 in the tests and one backup

With someone like Webster in the side and fit, he can bowl 10-15 overs per innings if required

Id assume Boland and Starc to spearhead the attack, Someone like Jhye the third seamer if we feel 3 pacemen is the better option, pending condition and the deck. But I reckon we go 2 spinners in the XI for both tests

No room for special K if all the names touted are selected.

I can see the reasoning. Suspectible to spin. Gets to play x4 shield games instead (Potentially a 5th if the blues make the final). Plenty of test cricket ahead this year so opportunities are there for those who miss out on this tour.

Some of these moves sound good for once. Should have happened last year though.

Just looked at fixtures.

BBL ends January. Shield recommences ending in March. Then you've got county cricket over in England beginning in April if any spots are open.

Test team is ageing. Multiple retirements imminent. If you're a young player then this is the one year to skip the IPL wank and play long format as much as possible.

Word is McSweeny, Connelly, Murphy, Kuhnermann are on the tour.

No room for Mitch Marsh whose test career has basically finished.

Glenn Maxwell won't wear the baggy green again.

Haze & Cummins wont travel.

Suspect Starc, Boland, Jhye & Abbott will be the 4 quicks

All good selections. McSweeney is excellent against spin (well, in Australia) and Connolly is exactly the kind of kid we need to be developing. Murphy picks himself for spinning conditions and Kuhnemann is a bit plod tbh but did well over there last go with the white ball and is a lefty so at least gives us something spinning the other way.

I wonder if/where they are going to bat McSweeney. Could mean they're looking to open with Head and have a middle order that's confident against spin. Not that Trav is ever not confident lol.

Isn't it nice to actually have selection questions....

He and Webster have been head and shoulders over the domestic comp for 3 years. If you gonna troll at least troll well.
Not trolling. We had a position for an opener, he got a free shot at a position he doesn't deserve. He'll be back if good enough

But Steve Smith or Marnus who was also suggested did? They're not openers either. The fact that the captain...err, sorry, the 'committee' has gone on record saying they don't care much about batting order and the fact we have no good openers doesn't mean the second top run scorer in Australia the last 3 years didn't deserve to be selected for the Test team.

Anyway he will get another shot and I hope we actually give him a chance this time, as well as Konstas and Webster and Connolly if we pick him. The jump from Shield to Test cricket is probably the biggest it's ever been. We can't be picking blokes for 2-3 Tests and then dumping them.

Smith is the best bat in almost 100 years he can do as he likes. His 90 odd in Brisbane last year was brilliant and I would have stuck with him.

The handling of McSweeney and Konstas by the selectors was absolutely ham-fisted. But I'm not sure where the deserving part comes in.

The second part is correct. Both are quite young and despite the boneheads leading the selections they have opportunities in front of them to cement a spot in the team.

Mitchell Marsh won't require his Baggy Green anymore

What does he do with it.

Frame it
Burn it
Lock it away in a safe
Sell it on Ebay

Missed out:

Handscomb
Maxwell
Marsh
Agar

All over 30 and in line to play champions trophy. Some of them are 3rd or 4th choice back ups for spots in the test team so I'm happy we have moved on. The ejection of Marsh is the most obvious choice. He is behind Webster and Green and at his age should just focus on white ball cricket and making money in t20 competitions.

I'm happy Jhye Richardson wasn't selected either. Big fan but he just hasn't played enough cricket.

I'm most interested in the make up of the batting lineup. I don't think Konstas is a lock. McSweeney or Inglis might find a way into the team. Should be a good series considering we are missing two of our best bowlers.

Fast stocks are light. Either Abbott will be playing some cricket or we will rely on Webster to throw down a lot of overs.
