We should have more teams, which means more fans and games to watch, I’d like to see this format

Conference One
Newcastle
Lake Macquarie
Central Coast
North Sydney
Manly
Cronulla
St George
Souths
Brisbane
Gold Coast
Nth Qld
West Brisbane
Port Moresby

Conference Two
Sydney
Canterbury
Parramatta
Penrith
Balmain
West’s
Illawarra
Auckland
Wellington
Melbourne
Perth
Adelaide
Canberra

Each top 8 go into elimination finals producing a top 4 for each conference, then
semi finals, then a final for Conference winners.
Each conference winner then plays off in an NRL Super Bowl, held in the capital city’s of either Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane, Perth or Adelaide, one week after the AFL decider.

I like the idea of conferences but I’m not sure exactly how you would divide the teams up into 2 conferences? Geographically?

I’m not sure rely tbh, maybe a 4 conference system of 6 teams each play ech Otha twice in the conference, teams that at close to ech other regionlly, then 4 conferences play each other for 12 games drawn different each year for variety, then play offs for this?

Like I said it’s a great idea and 1 which I’ve personally been calling for for years. The only problem is the actual structure of the conferences in terms of placing teams in the different conferences and the number of conferences you would have.

I’d also like to see South African teams 1 day in the NRL.

One day team from anywhere can apply to play in NRL, technogy advance with faster travel wil change eveythin as we know it.
In mid 20 century it take nerly 2 day to fly London to Sydney, now it take about 20 hour, in ths century it will probly be 40 mins air travel with space jet.

They need to do something.. Make the competition more consistent.
Stop magically making up the draw..

True. But I’d personally like to keep it to Southern Hemisphere teams with the bulk coming from Australia, 2-3 NZ teams, 1 South African team and maybe 1 day a png side.

The closest we’ve ever been to having 2 conferences was in the late 90’s during the super league ARL war.

Would have been interesting to see what RL down under would have looked like if these 2 leagues had continued but without the war and bad blood?? 2 professional leagues of 12 teams with both having a top 4 or 5 play off series resulting in 2 grandfinals and then the ultimate grand final between the winners of both leagues. Could have been massive.

Indeed. Both super league and the NRL are facing some huge dilemmas and questions in terms of league structure, expansion and “traditional” teams.

Both leagues need to expand imho but both face different problems. In the UK we have promotion and relegation which would threaten the existence of say a Toronto, Catalan, Toulouse or New York if they where to be relegated. While in the NRL any expansion would create a top heavy league of to many teams 18+. Add into that promotion and relegation is totally alien to you guys down under.

I honestly don’t know what the answer is but I do know that we are being left behind by union and if we don’t get our act together we are in serious danger!!!

What I’d like to see the NRL look like in say 10 years time would be :-

Conference “A”
Brisbane broncos
North Queensland cowboys
Gold Coast titans
Brisbane 2
Ipswich/Logan franchise
Port Moresby vipers
South African franchise
Perth
Melbourne
Adelaide
Canberra raiders
Cairns or Darwin franchise

Conference “B”
Newcastle knights
Central coast eagles
Illawarra stealers
South Sydney
Parramatta
Canterbury
Cronulla
Penrith
Roosters
West tigers
North Sydney bears
St George dragons

Puts tin hat and flak jacket on whilst slowly creeping under the table

Another good option, base in Fiji, woud be a pacific Islanders team call ‘ Islanders’ the best player from Fiji, Tonga, Samoa, Solomon Island and other Island nation that love league.

Can’t say I’m in favour of these combined teams/nations. For me a franchise has to be permanently based in one city/town and not split between various areas. Also unfortunately for these pacific island nations they are poor developing countries with low populations who would offer nothing in terms of revenue off the pitch. PNG are a different kettle of fish all together as they have population of nearly 9 million and growing all the time(projected at 11 million by 2030) plus they have huge oil, gas and mining corporations who I’m sure could be persuaded to invest in a NRL franchise.

Fiji should have a NSW cup team while the other Pacific island nations like Tonga, Samoa, Solomon Islands and Vanuatu etc should host pre season NRL trial matches as well as coaching clinics run by the NRL.

Sound good
The only way professional clubs in North America and RL for that matter will take off and succeed is to be part of an already established league/competition like super league or the NRL as a professional North American League featuring only US and Canadian teams will fail.
