I've enjoyed a few myself.

But, it still is a mind altering drink, especially to the perception of most, and under the current climate I would say it was a bad choice.

I agree, a very poor choice. Don't try and make a stand then demolish it two minutes later.

I'm glad there hasn't been any Emily "Should be anywhere but" Everywhere tonight. Jade Sutcliffe does a better job and should be there on a regular basis. At least she knows what she's talking about.

I'm glad we have this annual game v PNG at the end of every season. Good way to keep the rep train-on squad match-fit (for those who aren't in semis), but it would do so good for the PNG community in terms of awareness for issues liek AIDS, in a country where league is the national sport and NRL has a huge following.

Effects

A moderately potent kava drink causes effects within 20–30 minutes that last for about two and a half hours, but can be felt for up to eight hours. Because of this, it is recommended to space out servings about fifteen minutes apart. Some report longer term effects up to two days after ingestion, including mental clarity, patience, and an ease of acceptance. The effects of kava are most often compared to alcohol, or a large dose of Valium.
The sensations, in order of appearance, are slight tongue and lip numbing (the lips and skin surrounding may appear unusually pale); mildly talkative and sociable behavior; clear thinking; anxiolytic (calming) effects; relaxed muscles; and a very euphoric sense of well-being. The numbing of the mouth is caused by the two kavalactones kavain and dihydrokavain which cause the contraction of the blood vessels in these areas acting as a local topical anesthetic. These anesthetics can also make one's stomach feel numb. Sometimes this feeling has been mistaken for nausea. Some report that caffeine, consumed in moderation in conjunction with kava can significantly increase mental alertness.
A potent drink results in a faster onset with a lack of stimulation, the user's eyes become sensitive to light, they soon become somnolent and then have deep, dreamless sleep within 30 minutes. Sleep is often restful and there are pronounced periods of sleepiness correlating to the amount and potency of kava consumed. Unlike alcohol-induced sleep, after wakening the drinker does not experience any mental or physical after effects. However, this sleep has been reported as extremely restful and the user often wakes up more stimulated than he or she normally would. Although excessive consumption of exceptionally potent brew has been known to cause pronounced sleepiness into the next day. Although heavy doses can cause deep dreamless sleep, it is reported that many people experience lighter sleep and rather vivid dreams after drinking moderate amounts of kava.
After thousands of years of use by the Polynesians and decades of research in Europe and the U.S., the traditional use of kava root has never been found to have any addictive or permanent adverse effects. Users do not develop a tolerance. While small doses of kava have been shown to slightly improve memory and cognition, large amounts at one time have been shown to cause intoxication. In Utah, California, and Hawaii there have been cases where people were charged with driving under the influence of alcohol after drinking a significant amount of kava (eight cups or more) although some of them were acquitted due to the laws not being broad enough to cover kava consumption.

wiki is not a credible source

Maybe not but it appears that Johns was displaying behaviour that compares with some of the above.

Likewise Mario mentioning not being able to feel his tongue.

All in all, not a good time for them to be getting smashed on TV, whether it be regular booze or Kava grog.

Nobody ever accused them of being clever though.

I have some Kava in the kitchen, it's okay if you can handle drinking it (the taste is disgusting). It does make your tongue and lips go numb, your body feels really relaxed like it does with alcohol but with enhanced mental alertness and concentration.

I'm pretty sure that video wade years ago, vaguely remember seeing it before. I thought the video was the only funny part of the whole segment. Seeing grown men intoxicating themselves on live air is not what i consider as good entertainment.

Footy Show binge booze blue
Article from: The Daily Telegraph

September 19, 2008 12:00pm

RUGBY league fans have slammed The Footy Show claiming it glorified binge drinking last night as the game grapples with major alcohol-related incidents.

The hosts drank shots of the root-based Pacific Island drink of kava, a mild narcotic, while Fatty Vautin revved the audience up into chanting "skoll, skoll, skoll''.

Viewers immediately logged objections on sports chat sites, while listeners today contacted 2GB's league caller and morning show host Ray Hadley to lodge their objections.

While kava is not alcoholic, they were offended the hosts appeared to indulge in binge-type behaviour in a week when alcohol related incidents have shamed the sport.

The furore over the alleged behaviour of alcohol-fuelled Brisbane Broncos has dominated headlines and overshadowed coverage of the two biggest games of the year tonight and tomorrow.

"Obviously there is a massive issue that some NRL players have with alcohol and controlling their intake,'' wrote yeshia81 on the Australian Sport Message board.

"Yet tonight on owThe Footy Show, I see the hosts downing Kava with the crowd cheering them on.

"I don't know what the legal affiliation the NRL has with the Footy Show is, but surely, surely they would think it a good idea to try to clean their image up, and not support such primal antics as seen tonight.''

A channel Nine spokesman said the segment was a tribute to retiring Warriors player Ruben Wiki, who drank kava after each game for its anti-inflammatory properties.

"It was a designed as a light-hearted tribute to Ruben Wiki ... nothing more , nothing less,'' the spokesman said.

"For it ... to be linked with alcohol binges - after the Footy Show panel had already expressed a view that action need to be taken on that issue - is just schoolboy stuff.

"Apart from anything else, whatever it might be, kava is non-alcoholic.''

But at least someone was watching, as The Footy Show recorded one its worst ratings performances of the year in Sydney with less than 200,000 tuning in.

It was again beaten by the ABC's interactive political debate show Q&A, which had 249,000 viewers to The Footy Show's 191,000, pushing The Footy Show into fourth behind Law and Order: SVU and Ghost Whisperer.

It was a terrible result in a finals week - by comparison the AFL version in Melbourne had 417,000 viewers.

The show used to have 280,000 to 300,000 Sydney viewers, but numbers have slumped this year and last night was not the first they have dropped below 200,000.

in July Nine CEO David Gyngell was forced to back the program and say it would continue next year when Q&A first started beating it.

Hey, another DT story based on what the journos/interns read on LU...

Wow, 4th in the ratings. Hopefully 9 will pull it and replace it next year with a decent fresh mid-week show, about the actual footy?
