2009 Champions

There seems to be an assumption from Parramatta fans that they deserve the 2009 title, but surely this will not be the case.

By my recollection, St George finished on top of the league (ahead of Melbourne even). The final series was invented as a challenge, so that the victorious team would be challenged in a playoff, initially by the second side, but later this was expanded.

The fact that no side managed to successfully win the challenge means that the side that finished first (minor premiers St George) surely cannot lose their title and deserves to retain it.

I know Brisbane and Parramatta have a bit of a case to feel hard done by, but since we got rid of the top 5, there hasnt really been a second place. Surely St George are the only side that can be recognised as Premiers. I think they deserve it.

Have you been drinking? You think a team that didnt even make the GF deserves to be premiers? You are a delusional person....more delusional that Julia Gillard and her BER.

I think the team that finished the highest, won the most games deserves it a lot more than the team that finished 8th.

As i stated, history is on my side. The Final series is a challenge to the winner.

2009 and 2007 are write off years (unfortunately). Do you really think that the likes of Bennett, Soward, Cooper and co would accept being called 2009 premiers? It would be like kissing your sister.
The parra fans that "think" they deserve to be premiers have got NFI. This is not the Olympics when the drugged up sprinters get DQ'd. This is a 26 week season and 4 week finals series that has no many twists and turns that it is not a matter of copying and pasting in teams who "think" they deserved to be premiers.

As with every season. One of truths that when confronted with, pretty much every one here will whistle and look away.

You can;t make it first past the post in a season where teams lose players for rep games. It disadvantages the teams who supply the majority of the rep stars.

Plus from a purely business point of view it makes absolutely no sense to scrap the finals series. Crowds would die in the ass 8-10 weeks out from the finals when teams around the middle of the table have no chance of winning the premiership.

The Dragons didn't win the most regular season games in 2009.

I agree with what the NRL have done.

You can't argue that Parramatta were the other team in the Grand Final and therefore, they should get the title. What about the teams like the Broncos who Melbourne knocked out the week before?

Technically, Melbourne should not have taken part in the entire finals serious because they were cheats. If this were the case, you have an entirely different top 8 and set of outcomes.

Imo, last years finals series is null and void and the winner should be left blank.

Because a few Eels supporters are delusional and say that we are the premiers does not mean a majority feel this way!!!!

I am a massive Eels supporter and live and breathe them, i DO NOT want the premiership, i think you will find this quite a common theme!

I wish people would not throw all the Eels supporters in the same boat as the very small percent who think we should be the 2009 premiers!!!

Well, we are the only team that won any silverware last season, so I s'pose history will remember us as the most successful team of 2009.

I do agree with Bender though, I mean Melbourne shouldn't have even been competing in the finals, which means that the entire permutations of the final series should have been different, Saints wouldn't have played Parra in the first round, etc... maybe we wouldn't have been bundled out early and the maybe the Eels wouldn't have gone so far.

The premiership table provides a more reliable way of solving the problem, and incidentally if results from the Melbourne matches during the regular season last year are removed from team's point tallies, we still finish as Minor Premiers.

Thats right, but that doesnt mean you should be named premiers. People need to get it through their heads that just because the Storm have had their premierships stripped from them that some other team needs to be named premiers in their place. Thats not the case, those premierships are gone altogether, nobody will go down in the history books as 2007 or 2009 premiers and thats the way it should be.

Agreed. Nobody knows how it would have panned out if the Storm were caught prior to the finals. No other team be it the Dragons or the Eels can claim they would have won it for sure. If the Storm hadnt beaten the Bronco's they may have beaten the Eels as well. Who knows. It has been handled correctly.
