Eagles hit back to stun Quins

Aussie stars recover to clinch warm-up win
http://www.skysports.com/story/0,19528,12196_4960307,00.html

Manly Sea Eagles warmed up for next Sunday's World Club Challenge with a 34-26 victory over Harlequins at the Stoop, but required a second-half fightback to do so.

Manly coach Des Hasler started with an experimental line-up and it showed as the Super League side raced into a 20-0 lead inside the first half hour.

But Hasler brought on his big guns after the break and the Australians ran-in a total of six tries to score an emphatic success in the end.

Jon Wells opened the scoring in the sixth minute following a kick-through from Danny Orr and eight minutes later skipper Rob Purdham crashed over.

Almost immediately the hosts were back on the offensive and a Will Sharp break allowed Chad Randall to cross.

And although Manly began to come into the game more, Quins extended their advantage when Luke Dorn raced onto a clever Purdham kick to cross under posts before half-time.

But with skipper Matt Orford, Jamie Lyon and Brett Stewart brought off the bench the Aussies looked a different side after the turnaround.

Orford immediately orchestrated the first score with a perfectly weighted cross kick which Michael Robertson latched on to before touching down, and he quickly doubled up as Manly started to eat into the lead.

And although Jamie O'Callaghan went down the other end to score Harlequins' fifth try of the day, the tourists had the bit between their teeth and quick-fire tries from David Williams and Brett Stewart narrowed the gap to just four points.

Quins defence was buckling under the strain and it was almost inevitable when Lyon dived over following some fine passing and Steve Matai scored a sixth in the dying moments to seal the win.

The NRL champions will now have a further week to acclimatise before taking on Super League champions Leeds Rhinos at Elland Road.

A little surprised Manly are favourites TBH... Gonna be a cracker of a game this one, two very good sides going head-to-head... Leeds in a tight one for me.

Was at the stoop yesterday, definition of 'a game of two halves'

Manly started with an understrength side in the first half, while Quins had its stronger team on the park. Complete opposite happened in the second half, with Manly coming out with its first choice team and Quins resting its better players. Hard to guage how both teams fared, although Manly looked quite smooth in the second half and should knock Leeds off next week who have had an interuppted start to their season with injuries seeing them name a new team each week.

Oh yeah, some on teach Watmough to tackle. He's shocking.

Leeds Rhinos will be without at least 3 of our squad for Sunday With Webb still out after spinal surgery through the off season, Danny Buderus having a knee clearout and Greg Eastwood waiting on an appeal for his ancestoral visa.

Rob Burrow our half back hasnt played in nearly 6 weeks when he injured his back in a trial against Salford in Florida. McClennan has stated that he is "very doubtful".

Ali Lauitiiti injured his hamstring 2 weeks ago and is also doubtful.

In last weeks game Lee Smith left the stadium on crutches with an ankle injury. Jamie Peacock has injured his leg and Carl Ablett was also injured. Ryan Bailey was knocked out and received treatment for 8 minutes on the pitch before being stretchered off. He will have to have a Cog test this week.

Im not counting Eastwood for obvious reasons but thats still 8 players who could be missing. I can see this being a wark in the park for Manly personally.

If none of the above nake it then the team will be made up of reserves and juniors.

New buys Reni Maitua and Anthony Tupou will run out for their first games in Cronulla colours when the Sharks tackle the Newcastle Knights in a trial match to be played at Baddeley Park, Cessnock on Saturday.
The two new recruits will join the likes of Trent Barrett, Corey Hughes and Paul Gallen for the match this weekend, with Gallen also set to make his first appearance for 2009.
The Newcastle trial represents the Sharks last official hit out before round one of the NRL competition proper, which is set to take place on March 14.
The Sharks will be looking for a somewhat improved showing after a near full-strength Titans outfit scored 40 points against them in a trial played in Darwin last weekend.
Saturday’s trial match is set down for a 7.30pm start, with a Toyota Cup trial scheduled for 5.15pm and a NSW Cup match kicking off the afternoon at 3.30pm.
