Titans down Sharks 40-16 in Darwin
Tara Ravens

February 21, 2009 - 11:39PM

The Gold Coast Titans smashed the Cronulla Sharks 40-16 in their NRL trial match on Saturday night.

The Titans dominated the first two quarters at Darwin's steamy Richardson Park, retaining ball possession and slamming home the first two tries of the night.

Skipper Scott Prince engineered the Titan's attack and kicked six of seven goals while Mark Minichiello provided plenty of sting in defence, allowing the Queensland outfit to convincingly win by 24 points , with seven tries to three.

Prince headlined a host of stars, including veteran Matt Rogers, who showed attacking flair throughout the game despite the wet and slippery conditions.

Hard-running forward Minichiello scored the second try, coming from deep onto a short ball to break through Cronulla's lacklustre defence.
Corey Hughes set up the first try for the Sharks, providing a perfect inside ball to prop Kade Snowdon.

A sustained Titans attack resulted in the first try of the second quarter by Brett Delaney, while the Sharks lack of discipline ended in two penalties for the Titans and prop Ian Donnelly barging over the line.
A mistake from the Titans presented an opportunity for the Sharks to attack late in the second quarter, with hooker Corey Hughes scoring from dummy half on the final tackle.

Both teams retained possession well in the third quarter. A pin-point grubber kick from Blake Green led to the Shark's third try, with winger Dave Simmons pouncing on the ball just short of the dead ball line.
Ever the dominate force, the Titans hit back immediately with a try by Sam Tagataese.

Its even more noticable in person. He was standing along-side the likes of Matt Cross and Jeff Lima and made them look small.

Yeah De Gois got one of those tackle where the player comes over the top of him from behind.

Foundation Cup impressions:
Pearce, Minichiello, and whoever the number 24 was for Roosters looked particularly sharp, and dangerous in attack. Minichiello made multiple line breaks, seems to have his timing right hitting the holes which seemed to be a bit of a problem the last couple of times he returned form injury.
The experiment with Ben Jones at 6 and Anasta at 13 was unimpressive imo, with neither being involved enough in attack.
Poor discipline gave Tigers far too many piggy backs but defense seemed good.
Were the better team on the night but still lucky to get away with the win. Regardless, good signs, hopefully more improvement to come.

Tigers. Bombed one or two tries, another couple saved by desperate Roosters defence, in particular in the final minute. Gareth Ellis played well, whoever was the five eigth was good. Marshall sometimes looked sharp, other times threw passes metres behind their intended target. In Roosters 20 it was side to side stuff, not much doing. His long kicking game was utterly woeful.

2 referees, no major problems, don't know if it helped or not. There were many calls of "2 of them and they still cant bloody see!" "maybe they need a whole team of the pricks" etc...

Foundation cup---1 Tigers ten point better side on the night
2 tigers have a quality buy in the big pom
3 tigers kicking game in a word shocking
4 Mini keeps injury free he is in for a good season
5 Archer the most over rated ref of all time
6 the chooks and the tigers are along way off the pace
7 Benji is still only 10% as good as his headlines
8 both sides will have to be injury free to make the 8
9 junior junior looked good
10 tigers look to have some real talent in the u20's

Warriors 32
Cowboys 28

HT-18-16 to the Cowboys. Warriors gave up a good lead with not long to go, but came storming home with 2 late tries to grab the win. Apparently loads of missed tackles and handling errors in this game.

Crowd was over 16,000 and from reports there was a minutes silence for Sonny.

That's a pretty crap crowd for the Foundation Cup. In 2007 & 2008 this match got 15,000-odd.
