Penrith are aiming for 7000 Members.

They are more than double what they were last year at this point.

Before you ask, i don't know the exact figure. However, i know this from the numerous chats i have had with the Membership Manager.

That's great, lets hope it keeps going strong.
Penrith really should be able to get to 10K each year.

I believe you with your numbers, wasn't going to ask how you know.

Every Sydney team should aim to be over 10,000 member by 2014.
Every Sydney team should have been at 10,000 members in 1994 instead of 2014. The Swans are aiming for 35k members this season so this excuse that people have that it's somehow Melbourne culture to get memberships and Sydney people don't do that is BS, pushing membership has to be a huge priority for the IC.

I can't wait for the day when suburban grounds are just not big enough because teams have more ticketed memberships than seats in those grounds.

It isn't a Melbourne culture, it's an AFL culture.

Have you been to an AFL game live vs. watching it on TV?

Have you been to an NRL game live vs. watching it on TV?

Now tell me which sport is sh*t to watch on TV but good at the game and which sport is good either way?

Also keep in mind the huge numbers of Foxtel Subscribers in QLD & NSW compared to an AFL state, "membership" can be also be described as a medium to watch your team. Unfortunately the majority of NRL need Fox to do this, while the lazy fans don't need memberships because the game is suited to TV as it encompasses 20-30m stripe of the field at a time and will just watch 3games/week rather than joining up to their club.

Yes I'm an AFL fan aswell, and generally speaking AFL is best suited for at the game viewing and NRL for tv viewing. But still that's just an excuse, and so is laziness. The clubs, and the NRL itself need to shove memberships down everybody's throat, getting more people to buy memberships would also increase crowds. That's two areas where the NRL needs to improve.

We're always crying poor about money, well the big reason we're crying poor (along with the tv deal) is below par crowds and memberships.

Do you know that per capita the NRL is the 2nd best attended sporting competition in the world?

AFL is no.1.

Yes we need to improve but attendances are not the be all and end all, TV deals, exposure and sponsorship are.

I've never understood this argument. I know I've only been to a hand full of AFL games but I find that the field is so big and you are so far away from most of it that when at the game you end up watching most of the action on the big screens unless it is in your 1/4 of the field. Compared to RL where you are close to the action (in a decent stadium) and can see everything that's happening. I would suggest that NRL is in fact far far better to watch live than AFL. You can hear the big hits, have wingers scorching past you just a few metres away and can see the majority of the game close up.

This explains a lot.

Yes it does explain a lot. It explains I don't spend any of the precious 24 hours I have in a day hating on another code. My 2 favourite sports are the two biggest sports in Australia, I enjoy following Australian football (just AFL and NRL, Union sucks) if you think that's a negative personality trait then you're an idiot.

And what the Rugby League bashers and AFL cheerleaders seem to oh-so conveniently forget is that RL membership numbers does not include Leagues Club memberships. Sure, it's not as good as season tickets which convert to bums on seats, but it is still an individual gaining a form of membership to a NRL club and financially contributing a commitment to an NRL club. I think Parramatta Leagues club has 45,000 members.

If you add Leagues clubs memerships to the NRL clubs totals it more than stacks up against AFL.

hmm leagues club memberships have little to do with support for NRL clubs generally. I think you'd find if you took the pokie machines and cheap feeds out of Leagues clubs you would see a massive drop off in memberships. If their was a correlation you would see much higher ticketed season members for the NRL clubs in places like Penrith etc.

This. I know countless people who have leagues club memberships who have no interest what so ever in footy. A footy club membership is so much more valuable and a very good sign of a club's strength and popularity. Which is why every single club should relentlessly push memberships.
