Chelsea manager Jose Mourinho has been charged with improper conduct by the Football Association after being sent to the stands during the Premier League leaders' shock defeat by Aston Villa last weekend.

Portuguese boss Mourinho was dismissed by referee Chris Foy after going on to the pitch at Villa Park on Saturday following a red card to Chelsea midfielder Ramires.

A brief statement from English football's governing body said: "It is alleged the Chelsea manager's behaviour in re-entering the field of play in or around the 90th minute of the fixture and approaching the match referee amounted to improper conduct."

Mourinho has until next Monday to respond to the charge.

FA rules state that managers must not leave the technical area during the course of the match.

However, after Saturday's fixture Mourinho said several people had left the touchline to go on the pitch.

"I was two-three metres inside the pitch or four-five metres, but there was like 10 persons there. It was me, my two assistants, (Villa boss) Paul Lambert, Paul's assistants," Mourinho said.

"And there was (Gabriel) Agbonlahor, who came in and made an aggression on Ramires from behind.

"So if I was sent off because I was on the pitch, I ask why not the others, especially one player that made an aggression on another one, Agbonlahor on Ramires?"

Mourinho was sent to the stands after Ramires's red card for a studs-up challenge on Karim El Ahmadi.

Speaking on Monday, Mourinho said he'd tried to talk to Foy after the match.

"I tried to speak to Mr Foy twice. I tried to speak on the pitch and I tried in the dressing rooms.

"In the dressing rooms I tried to ask politely, can you give me five seconds? And he refused."

Mourinho's sending-off was his second of the season - he was fined 8,000 pounds ($14,617) by the FA after his dismissal against Cardiff City in October.

We got lucky with the Sturridge one. I don't think there was any contact at all. I think he just tripped over himself.

Nah I'm also counting in the ones where Sturridge was clipped by Carrick, and Suarez kept getting hacked from behind, but kept on his feet.

Definitely a dive, clearly missed him. No wonder he was so pissed off about it

We're coming for you Chelsea. Our 2nd string midfield, but we're coming. We're hungry. 1000. Wenger v Mourinho. Real club v plastic club. North v West. Good v evil. Win this and we're in the box seat.

even if we win, Man city have about 300 games in hand. but i just loaded up on Chelsea 2-1 2-0 and 3-0 .... Kos to be sent off and Caz to be injured.

We still have to play City. So even with their games in hand we can stop them getting ahead of us if we just keep winning.

Chelsea by 2 or 3 for sure.

How the f**k are arsenal in the box seat if they beat Chelsea. Still be a point behind regardless. Gunners don't have the mettle to go all the way. How many times are we going to hear "if we win, we're in the box seat" this season.

A point behind with a game in hand. I'd rather that than being a point ahead on 1 more game.

Yeah fair point. Be a massive effort if you blokes can walk away from the bridge with even a point tbh. Not sure what result I want as a red fan tho. Realistically I don't think we're gonna do it. Much more focused on a 3rd place finish at the moment.

Should be a cracker of a game regardless.
