Sharks double membership despite turmoil

July 25, 2013

During a season in which their very survival has been questioned, Cronulla have managed to double their membership.
Whether their efforts in increasing their membership above 10,000 has come as a result of the drugs shadow that has been on the club for most of this year is difficult to gauge. But the effort of the club to increase its membership from 5126 to 10,149 (and counting) has been hailed ''a significant milestone'' by football boss Steve Noyce.
Noyce said the turmoil caused by the Australian Sports Anti-Doping Authority investigation had ''galvanised'' the club, while also saying that 10,000 members had been a goal of officials before the drugs body began looking into the club's practices in the 2011 season.
''It's a real credit to the staff,'' Noyce said. ''It's such a significant milestone. We're all really proud of the achievement and we're excited about it. The most pleasing thing is we can get more than that.''

Asked whether supporters had responded to the club's turbulent year, Noyce said: ''I think the numbers had been increasing before February. But it certainly galvanised the community - they wanted to get behind the club. But the bigger picture is, they were ballsy to set a target of 10,000. They've worked hard and all of a sudden we get to 10,000. Now we can be excited about getting to 15,000.''
South Sydney have more members than any other club in the NRL, having grown their membership base from 22,154 last year to 27,300 this year. But Parramatta had the biggest jump, taking their figures from 11,012 to 16,836, despite their on-field problems.
From where they were, and with the drugs investigation still hanging over the club's head, the Sharks' efforts are arguably the most remarkable of any of the 16 clubs.
The team had a slow start to the season before enjoying a mid-season resurgence, which came to an abrupt halt at Allianz Stadium on Saturday night when they were thrashed 40-0 by Sydney Roosters.

There is a table showing all clubs in the paper, but I can't see it online.

that table is pretty poorly researched, considering their tally is at odds with our members counter on out website reads higher than that

doesn't make it any less wrong

a couple were lower according to the spreadsheet I'll update and double check tonight.

at any rate it only leaves the warriors, knights and broncos that haven't matched last years totals. IMO only the warriors have a realistic shot of beating last years result if they start performing on the field.

People's lives change, not everyone can afford the cost every year. Your comment is just ridiculous. People's circumstances change every day.

I was a tigers member in 2011 but lost my job at the end of the year so I couldn't afford membership in 2012.

Only 3 clubs below 10,000 is pretty good.

Of those clubs I can see Penrith making a rapid expansion in the coming years as Gould's plans come together. You'd have to think the only thing standing between them and 15,000+ members is a single well planned marketing campaign.

The Raiders for their part could help things greatly with a new stadium, or even just reevaluating the pricing on their season tickets which at present are insanely expensive.

The Titans.... who the hell knows with that basket case.

I do fear for the storm over the next 5 years though as Smith, Slater, and Cronk retire. Bellamy will bail at that point as well you'd think so who the hell knows what their fanbase will do when they aren't playing in a grand final every other year.

Why? I know that I am not forking out memberships when Griffin is head coach. I spend enough on the club without buying a membership considering the players frankly couldn't care less.

It's hard to say what will happen, Melbourne seem to have a more ingrained cultured when it comes to memberships which is why the AFL clubs don't seem to have this problem down there. I think initially the storms memberships will stagnate but i think long term it will turn out to be a good. Too much success and people come to expect, having a few lean periods helps to galvanise the fan base.

I'd be quite happy if we just stay near the top though ;-).
