With the greatest respect it really isn't hard to flip through the last 2-3 pages, you'll see it several times.

All sixteen clubs again for a refresher anyway....

Which one is the Bulldogs Guernsey?

Amazing. These marketing dudes just don't get it!

To confuse fans and new ones at that is rife with lack of foresight.

Familiarity of colours and jumper designs are very significant in maintaining and strengthening fan loyalty. Not to mention confusing current and potential facns is just ludicrous club marketing policy!

Oh well! The struggle goes on!

These jerseys are worn for two days and are being marketed directly to people who are already fans. I hardly think it's working against maintaining or strengthening fan loyalty....

I entirely disagree with this assessment...

These jerseys change every single you, sure, but they are only used once. Do you not see how perfect this is?!!!

Clubs can come up with these crazy designs and sell as many as they can, and they can do this every single year. And yet it has no effect on the clubs core image. Where, historically, teams would change their main jersey every few years, now they can keep their main for decades and still make huge profits on these new designs.

Best of both worlds for the clubs and the fans. SO STOP BITCHING!!!!!!

Long term I'd imagine they would be pushing nines to new fans, similar to rugby 7's and 20/20.

The Bulldogs one is quite obviously Canterbury when you think about it looking like something a steroid importer would wear to the gym.

Dogs jersey has a little bit of this about it

You could stencil the black mess straight onto the hood and it would match the Hectikness that is the 9's jersey.

The Bulldogs jersey is horrible, I think it would have had more effect if the gold was actually gold, the gold that the Newcastle Jets use for their numbers or the Gold Australia cricket used a few years ago when they changed to majority green. Wouldn't make the jersey any more desirable, but anything has to be better than that baby poo monstrosity!

Very difficult to achieve a metallic look on a jersey. Metallic inks are dependent on the substrate they are printed on. The Aus cricket shirt you are talking about had metallic numbers and trim but the actual fabric which was gold coloured (the collar gusset) was roughly the same shade as the Dogs jersey.

There's two workarounds: one is to apply a material that will show metallic inks better than the jersey material (like the cricket shirt) which is prone to peeling off, the other is to apply gradients which simulate a metallic sheen. The Storm have done well with in the past with their preseason jerseys and (I assume) their nines jersey.

Rather than strengthening their brand through familiarity you see it as an opportunity to experiment?

Wow I've seen baseless logic but the cheap quick money from crap designs doesn't replicate into long term support.

I disagree that only longtime fans will watch this tournament. Their will be many fans that will watch that are new to RL and these fans will be very confused. especially if they go on to watch the NRL. Not to mention many current fans that will try to figure out who are the Bulldogs or Cowboys etc!

You put is as a gimmick I put as poor club marketing.
Mind you if it stops the clubs from forever changing their main strips then I see you have decent point!

For instance, the AFL(AFL) clubs rarely tamper with their main playing strips. This is aimed at consolidating their familiarity in the market place. Something RL clubs need to seriously take on board!

I think the answer lies in between. The nines IS the time to make crazy things and leave the more traditional designs to the season proper. However, each team needs to be easily identifiable to the uninformed. It certainly is possible to make something wild without straying too far from your base identity and I think most clubs have managed this for the nines.

The main thing that is being forgotten is that the Bulldogs jersey looks like shit, literally and figuratively.

It really does, poor choice in shade has set back the cause for a team to wear a decent shade of brown by years.

I agree with what you are saying but all AFL teams play in a "tampered" jersey in there pre-season comp, sometimes radically so.

(Well from what Ive seen on TV)

I mean this not to insult you - but to illustrate the fact that your opinion is merely yours.... the proof will be in the jersey sales of this thing, not opinions of people on a jersey thread.

Regardless of how shit most people on here think it may be, it's going to sell like freakin' hotcakes.

so does justin beibers albums but that doesnt make them any good.

there will always be the diehard fans who'll buy anything (my collection of shitty broncos designs is testament to that), but that doesnt mean the design is good. and i dont mean from a designers point of view like gazf's. the dogs have had some great jerseys and i dont think its bad for clubs to tinker with jerseys but try and remain some form of identity. this dogs jersey doesnt do this in any way (unless you count the club logo)

My point is - if it sells, why is the design for something like a 9's jersey important?

It's hardly going to set a precedent... Cantebury's home, away and heritage jerseys have had such minimal changes over such a long period of time and I dare say will continue to. Going a little bit batty with a one-off design... they're well within their rights IMO - as would any other club be.
