Two I've never heard of....

Peter Dinklage - looks like a poor man's version of Liam Gallagher (which in itself is pretty poor!). Only ever seen the first episode of Game of Thrones so I know nothing of this dude.

Brendan Gleeson - I've seen Braveheart but this guy left zero impression. Looks like a cross between Fatty Vautin and Gus Gould.

Will Smith

Known for: Ali, Men In Black Trilogy

Notes: He's a triple threat with established success in music, TV and films, based his Independence Day character on Han Solo (really?), and turned down the role of Neo in The Matrix.

God, those movies would have been so much better with a person who could actually act in the lead.

Brendan Gleeson

Known for: In Bruges, Braveheart

Notes: plays the fiddle, is Irish. Probably drinks beer alot. A pint of the usual thanks, landlord. Cheers.

As much as I enjoy Gleeson's work as a character actor, I've got to say I'm stunned he got into the top fifty. Not exactly the kind of guy you imagine people being huge fans of

tbh one of my fave Gleeson characters is the sheriff in Lake Placid, so dry and sarcastic, so agro, worked beautifully with eccentric Oliver Platt

Gleeson was my no.1! Haha

I love his work. His performances in The General, In Bruges and The Guard are some of the funniest stuff I've seen on the big screen.

My favourite character actor who deserves a lot more appreciation.

I love the guy's work in virtually everything he's done. He plays a great, menacing villain.

It was just a surprise to see him higher placed than legendary A-listers like Redford and co.

Jim Carrey

Known for: The Mask, Ace Ventura: Pet Detective

Notes: has performed on stage with Elton John, insisted that his favourite band Cannibal Corpse appear in the first Ace Ventura film, and shares the same birthday with Andy Kaufman, whom he played in biopic Man on the Moon.

39.

robinwilliams_zps75d7eebc.jpg

Robin Williams

Known for: Good Will Hunting, Good Morning Vietnam

Notes: is a fan and personal friend of Jonah Lomu, was in the running to play the (other) lawyer in Philadelphia, which ended up being played by Denzel Washington, and was offered the role of the Riddler in Batman Forever, but instead the part went to Jim Carrey.

val_kilmer_2005_05_13_zps518420ab.jpg

Val Kilmer

Known for: The Doors, Top Gun

Notes: went to school with Kevin Spacey, did his own singing in The Doors, didn't want to be in Top Gun but had contractual obligations, and is impossible to find a decent image of him where he doesn't look like Clive Palmer.

michaelcaine_zps145817c3.jpg

Sir Michael Caine

Known for: Alfie, Hannah & Her Sisters

Notes: growing up he shared a flat with Terence Stamp (Kneel before Zod!), wasn't present to accept his best supporting actor Oscar because he was filming Jaws 4 at the time (lol), supporter of Chelsea FC (boo), and has been nominated for an Oscar at least once in 5 consecutive decades (apparently, I didn't check).

bruce-willis_zps7b9bffd1.jpg

Bruce Willis

Known for: Die Hard, The Sixth Sense

Notes: was born in Germany, got the part of John McClane after Stallone and Schwarzenegger passed on it (thank god), and wears his watch upside down with the face on the inside of his wrist.

Glad to see Carrey made the cut. He's best known for his comedy work, but his recent forays into more dramatic territory have shown he's far more than just a rubbery face and funny voices.

I forgot to vote for Carey. I love his Ace Ventura movies and The Truman Show is amazing.

So far 2 of my picks, Willis and Neeson, are in. 8 to go.

Are we taking bets on number 1?

He stole the show as Doc Holliday in Tombstone

I'm your huckleberry

Is that the Doc Holliday who has the little pewter cup that he spins like a revolver? It's been a while, but yes that was a show stealer.

Still, top 50?

Once again, before anyone takes this list as gospel - this is a countdown of people's FAVOURITE actors, not who is regarded as the best.

Leslie Nielsen

Known for: The Naked Gun, Flying High!

Notes: was considered for the role of Willy Wonka in Burton's remake, dubbed the "Sir Laurence Olivier of spoofs", and was also up for the lead in The Shining.

kevinSpaceyOscar_zps5a1bca7d.jpg

Kevin Spacey

Known for: The Usual Suspects, American Beauty

Notes: voted greatest actor of the 90's by Empire Magazine, drives a mini cooper, and is a huge fan of professional wrestling.

33.

sam-rockwell-picture_zpscca3210f.jpg

Sam Rockwell

Known for: The Green Mile, Confessions of a Dangerous Mind

Notes: made a small appearance in Killer Klowns from Outer Space that ended up on the cutting room floor, is presently filming Poltergeist, and has no other real quirky trivia notes that I can find.

32.

russell-crowe_100320202_s_zpsfecf97ab.jpg

Russell Crowe

Known for: Gladiator, A Beautiful Mind

Notes: turned down the role of Logan/Wolverine in the X-Men film series, is the cousin of former NZ cricketers Martin & Jeff Crowe, and his first professional acting gig was in The Rocky Horror Picture Show.

31.

James-Gandolfini-HBO_zps6f1a1a97.jpg

James Gandolfini

Known for: The Sopranos, bit parts in so many popular films

Notes: was a pacifist, so had reservations about The Sopranos/being Tony Soprano, was in the running for the role of The Thing from Fantastic Four, was also up for the role of Vincent Vega in Pulp Fiction, which of course went to John Travolta - who Gandolfini starred with in 5 films.

The Truman Show is a classic. It's brilliance is in the foretelling of the reality tv craze, which came not long after.
