2014, will the game turn around?

Despite the feel good factors at the end of 2012 with RL finally being owned and run by itself and the shedding of news ltd, a new billion $ TV deal, increased memberships and a general feel good around the game (doping allegations aside) 2013 saw crowds and TV audiences for NRL drop.

What factors caused this?
Disappointment at ch9 and fox providing same old same old?
Lack of decision on expansion to ignite some new interest and energy?
Brisbane, wests, st George, warriors etc not at the top of the tree?
Fixed scheduling?
Poor fixture choice by fta?
More weeknight games?
SOO driving people away from club games?
A general population disinterest in sport shown by similar declines in other codes?

Will we see a reversal in 2014 and see crowds and audiences rise or is growth of the game wholly dependent on a select few clubs being at the top to drive the bigger fan bases?

Has the NRL done anything in your opinion to reverse last years decline?

Memberships seem to on the increase this year so there is hope.

I think the SOO has lost a lot of its pulling power; plus many comp games are boring to the general public - 5 hit ups and kick to the corner; wait for a mistake.

so tv and crowds marginally down (really depends on who's on top of the ladder - Easts and Manly as the best won't pull crowds. Tigs, Bulldogs or Eels up to will add big crowds) means the game is in a rut?

I like to think the game is going good. The clubs are all boosting their membership numbers, we've got a billion dollar TV deal which will allow us to strengthen our game. Salary Cap is going up so we'll keep a lot of good players. We have the SBW factor. We've got a new and exciting pre season comp next month. Sure the game isn't perfect, but it's not going backwards

If I was cynical I'd say the OP was fishing for someone to bring up expansion as some sort of magic solution.

As for the Rah Rah fans post about Origin, how many bongs have you pulled mate??

Apart from the SBW shit, agree 100%

Mr Red, asked a question; my answer was that the casual viewer (interstate or only use to watch the origin) is not inclined to get excited about it; anymore.

I think Mr Red, wants someone to say the game needs to expand with a team in WA (Perth).;-)

But you would agree with the Knightsman; it is all (drop in ratings) because the shoulder charge was banned:lol:

I think the biggest problem is that the teams just aren't that great at the moment. It's a pretty average comp. The standard hasn't been high for a few years.

The Roosters have a fantastic team - they are hard to fault (unless you hate Mitchell Pearce). But all the other teams have glaring weaknesses. The Eagles have no attack up the middle and not much out left. The Rabbits are weak in the outside backs. The Dragons lack mongrel in the pack. The Dogs have very little creativity. The Knights are a bit old and a touch slow. You put 2 gun signings in any of these teams and they would be fantastic. But the player pool just isn't quite there at the moment.

A big part of the problem is that there aren't a lot of great halves around. Very few teams have both an established half and five eight. The Eagles are the exception but look at the rest - Storm (Cronk/Hampton), Rabbits (Reynolds/Keary), Tigers (Brooks/Anasta), Broncos (nothing) etc. Everywhere you look there are young blokes trying to make their marks in a very difficult position.

The playmakers haven't been there en mass and until it changes, I don't see the games living up to expectation. So people march with their feet.

On a side note, it is disgraceful having to watch the Broncos every week. Even when they were great, I didn't want to watch them every week. And they will be poor again in 2014. Why would non-QLDers want to tune in?

What qlder wants to watch them? (Other than brisbane fans)

I would love to see the ratings difference between a broncos v out of state team, a cowboys v out of state team, and a titans v out of state team. I don't reckon there wouldn't be much in it, the first game up here will rate regardless of who's playing as long as its a good game. Last year was f**king painful watching a limp wristed
Broncos every f**king friday.

All 3 Origins were in the top 6 most watched TV programs of 2013.

But of course until it's big in Georgia you probably wouldn't rate it :)

Wow you talk some s**t.
SOO has lost it's pulling power? Guessing you didn't hear about the ratings and crowd figures this year...

I think ratings for NRL games weren't helped by the fact some of the bigger rating teams like Parra and the Dragos were woeful this year.

Show me the non-NSW and Qld TV ratings figures compared with previous years. You are in line for some attitude adjustment - Night Vision where are you.

Im certain TV ratings were only off by around 1% which is basically stastically irrelevant. (I.e the same as the year before)

Happy to be corrected though.

So, we will need to rig the comp; because they will be Shitenhusen again in 2014.;-)
