The issue I have with this is these are the sort of game we can schedule for like Queens Birthday Holiday and push towards 50k within 5 years or so. Sure it will take dirt cheap GA tickets and both sets of members free entry but can be done and will get to the 20k ave or so the NRL want

In my game of the round Friday and sunday model this would be an NRL game of the round played at ANZ on a Sunday afternoon with a target 20k+ crowd. It is dumb to play any Sydney "derby" game interstate. Part of the problem is the NRL have still shown zero leadership in taking games on the road and just leave it to clubs to do what they want.

surely the home game v Titans, storm or Raiders would have been a logical one to move? NT fans wont care, they are just starved of NRL and will turn up regardless of whose playing.

Agree 100 percent PR. A Parra Titans(Raiders, Storm etc) game would likely generate the same interest in Darwin as a Parra v Penrith game but considerably less so in Sydney.

Its not the end of the world but its also not the strategic thinking the NRL have been saying they will use.

Maybe they chose the Panthers because they are so close to the Eels, that way fans of the club don't really miss out on much because it's not far to travel if they want to watch the Panthers play the Eels in May. It's probably better than if they played the Warriors in Darwin.

I dare say it was to do with timing rather than opponent

it's pretty simple, the eels set the date of the NT game before the draw was announced and when the NRL became aware it coincided with the game against Penrith they offered the eels to submit an alternative round for NT and the eels declined citing that the perith game wouldn't have been 'off limits' for NT anyway.

couldnt the NRl have fixed the draw to determine a better result in terms of opponent seeing as the dtae had been set?

As I said these strategically important games for growing the NRL should be planned and funded by the NRL anyway not left to the chance a club might arrange one. We've gone from three games in 2013 to one game this year in Perth. Way to grow the game Dave!

Agreed,

Just because Bathurst, Darwin Mackay have paid money to a team shouldn't dictate that an NRL fixture should be played there

Realistically we are never going to have an NRL team in either of these backwaters,

So what is the point, other that a quick cash grab

You would think that if the cities, of Perth, Wellington, Ipswich, Adelaide really wanted an NRL side like some say they do, their local councils, governments would be throwing money at NRL to stage games in their cities...

we have plenty of prof sports clubs, in fact RL is the only code in Australia without a prof club here. The NRL needs Perth more than Perth needs the NRL so why would the Govt pay for a one off club game after years of being promised a permenant club (and spending $120mill refurbing a stadium partly on the that promise) NRL has burnt plenty of bridges here.

Interestingly though the WA Govt has just given soccer $400k to host a socceroos match at nib. I wonder if the NRL has ever approached them about hosting a Kangaroos game? I think we know the answer.

You could also say the NRL needs Melbourne more than Melbourne needs NRL....

But the Vic govt pays for origin, tests etc...

The WA mining boom is over, the population has shown signs of a decline, they are building a stadium that will cost best part of $1B...

And eagles v dockers doesnt fill hotel rooms, restaurants and taxis like an origin or a nines, would

I'm sure if we are talking origin the state govt would be interested. For a club game? What's the benefit to the state? Places without much sport are willing to pay, places like perth and adelaide don't need to. Big events, sure the kudos, travelling fans etc has value. The point is if the nrl is serious about growing its appeal beyond its traditional boundaries it needs a concerted and sustained exposure plan. Having the odd game once in a blue moon does little to create ongoing interest in the game.

Ps you are confusing slowing with decline. Perths population is showing no signs of declining. It will slow for next 3-5 years up until the next boom comes along. Such is the nature of the place. And tbh most of us would welcome a decline to bring cost of living back to some sensible level.

On top of every other single permutation, the draw is complex enough as it is, the eels should have waited until they knew who they were playing in that weekend before selling it off to the NT or at least changed it like the NRL asked them if they wanted to, the eels didn't care.

 Cute story to fit your agenda of bashing dave - but the simple fact is that if Perth wanted more games they'd be making it happen come hell or high water. Manly, Canterbury, Souths, Penrith and Parramatta all take games to other states or regional centres and you're telling me Perth couldn't get the lions share of them? Please.
