If they did go for Cummins (or to a lesser extent Pattinson), they don't lose too much with the bat. Behrendorff I guess is the only other test candidate? Maybe I'm forgetting someone....

I'd risk Cummins personally. Patto looked rubbish in the BBL and I haven't heard anything about how he's gone since. Cummins has looked good since coming back....I think Bird will play the next test anyway. It's a tough ask to fly a quick over probably Sunday or even Monday for a Thursday start

Howard won't let Cummins play, just played his first shield game in just about forever so he will wrap him in cotton wool now for 6 months or more.
Personally I think he is worth the risk. If he managed to help win just 1 of the next 2 tests and then broke down for another 12 months I think it would be worth it.

Well, if Cummins stay in Aust he's gonna play 4 days on the WACA. About the worst thing they could do is send him over to India and not play him. Either get him there and play him or leave him to some game time in the Shield.

We always have to remember that Jackson Bird's batting has cost him his place to Joe Mennie before.

Well, this is interesting. Cummins is the best option, but pitches don't suit and may not be worth the long-term risk. He can bat a bit as well.

Agreed, he is the best option but he has played 1 Shield game. Will they risk him ? and if he goes will he just be a net bowler ?

Starc made some very important contributions with the bat and if anything Cummins is a better batsman but that should not be selection criteria for picking your best bowlers.

Anyway, knowing our selectors they will send Joe Mennie.

Funnily enough I initially wrote '(I'm excluding Mennie, Sayers, and Boland') and then deleted it.

I have an odd feeling that they might consider Chris Tremain.

Sayers just took zero wickets against the Blues in the shield game, he's probabaly a shoe in

Chris Tremain is a damn good bowler, and can bat as well.

That's why someone like Sayers or Mennie will be picked.

.

Batting is obviously not the main criterion, but at some level it is relevant. If you picked 4 x Chris Martin the impact on the batting lineup would lose you a lot of tests.

good point Baz but I doubt you could find 4 batsman in any one country who bat like Chris Martyn

Good selection but I'd definitely play Bird in the third test. Cummins will be very underdone on Thursday morning. Let him acclimatise, get his body clock right, rip in in the nets for a week and consider him for the fourth test IMO

Not a bad idea actually

I'm prepared to alter my prediction for the relative Lyon/SOK threat for this test. The likely low and slow swings things back towards SOK.

Really dunno how Cummins will go, but worth a shot.

Apparently Cummins tried to bowl several bouncers and couldn't get them over the waist on the practice wicket. At his pace when one stays low (and looking at the disgrace of a wicket they've allegedly prepared, it's an absolute when) if it's on the stumps it'll be totally unplayable.

He'll be more useful if we bowl second I guess. If it's just a lack of bounce, but predictable no big threat. But as it gets more variable, yeh.

If the deck is terrible then 10-15 overs of Cummins could destroy them provided he is on song (ie accurate)

If he bowls like Starc did in the 2nd innings of the 2nd test then can leak massive runs, on a sub 200-250 deck that could be the game right there

Id prefer Bird and Hazlewood for the 3rd test , at their pace if they maintain their accuracy they will cause havoc. Hopefully either SOK or Lyon can bag big hauls again. Pick Khawaja for Mitch Marsh

If we lose the 3rd test then we may as well bring out the artillery for the 4th test, the big show and stoinis...
