I do not understand how you can defend the Canberra (and Newcastle) situation in week 3 scenarios. if the next rule was games between Sydney and Queensland sides in week 3 must be played at Lang park to guarantee a crowd and therefore league revenue, imagine the whinging then. by comparison that is what canberra are being asked to do.
No, it's really not. Canberra doesn't have a stadium capable of hosting a preliminary final and never has.
You'll find I'm not a fan of Melbourne having their prelim at AAMI Park, should be at Etihad. But that's another discussion.
Your DOGGIIIIIIIIIIES only got 19,367 in the 2004 semi-final vs Melbourne:

I was about to say you had to go back twelve years, but the URL exposed your lie there. It was 2003, so thirteen years ago. My understanding was we were discussing the "last few years", not the last few decades.
Yes dickhead
in comparison to Sydney
who
couldn't half fill a 45K seat stadium with 2 Sydney sides playing
including a self anointed " big" Sydney club in the Bulldogs lol
Two in form teams played last night with Penrith just a couple of hours up the road, sent busloads of fans but still you couldn't out-draw that paltry crowd?

You just know the highlight of Timmah's year is the chance for him to justify his love of Sydney games. Can just picture him sitting there waiting impatiently for the crowd figure to be read, then turn the game off instantly so he could focus all of his energy on stats defending Sydney finals.

Are you capable of discussing crowds, or are you too busy with personal attacks?

You also over-estimate how much people care about Canberra. You lot have spent this entire season bleating despite the fact you're still bottom four of the home crowd averages, and have been for years.

The NRL needs Canberra to be strong with membership & attendance, and I hope it continues into next season. But I'm not holding my breath.

I'd like to think the Raiders could push their average closer to 15K from the momentum they've gathered this year. The Viking Clap has created a tradition too.

Doubt it. They might have had 18,000 fans there last night if you include a few neutrals. To reach 15k regularly would be tough, especially when the trend across the board is going the other way.

So what are the criteria for a week 3 stadia in you eyes? Are crowds in the National rugby league so large that we should reserve finals fixtures to be played at Homebush, Lang park or Moore park only? I think not. If Townsville is good enough for week 3 then so is Canberra and Newcastle. Why should teams who have earned home advantage be forced to travel, its just another point in the list detracting from the sporting integrity of the league.

Anyone got Pax numbers for Cronulla v Canberra yet? Might struggle on a Friday night and especially hard on North Qld fans with less than a weeks notice. Somewhere between 20-25k I would guess

This simplistic "if Townsville is, Canberra is" rubbish has been done to death. Townsville is a 15 hour drive (1,350km) from the nearest major capital with a large stadium. By comparison Canberra is just 3 hours away (280km) from ANZ, which while not convenient, is a far sight easier than travelling that far. They've also got a new stadium coming up there.

And to answer the question in the opening line - yes Preliminary Final crowds are that large they should only be played at major venues.

Wow, shithouse crowd in Canberra last night. Should have played it at ANZ - would have pulled at least 25000 there.

Lol
Yes & 60,000 empty seats

I think you should put your hand up to run the NRL
With a moronic Sydneycentric view like yours you'd be a shoe in.
Well
Timmah would give you a run for your money lol

They stay in & around the top 4 next season & get a decent draw
( few night games in the middle of winter )

they should get near a 15K average

What distance would be unacceptable for raiders fans to have to travel in timmahs mind. Somewhere between 300kms and 1400kms obviously

I'm pretty sure that's the typical Sydney view though
Must be in a bigger venue

The AFL for all its faults has the common sense to know a slightly bigger crowd in a much bigger venue
Does not help the image of the game & in fact harms the brand.
That's why they chose 20000 @ spotless as opposed to 30000 @ ANZ

Canberra was certainly louder last night than last week. Though you got to hand it to the Panthers fans they can make some noise as well. The SFS atmosphere wasn't that bad because of them.

I understand you're a pessimist but 20-25K is a ridiculous estimate.
Will be 30K easy. Minimum.

I'd say 30K maximum
The cowboys Will bring about 5 with them.

The Sharks are arguably the smallest club in Sydney.
It's a Friday night so not many neutrals & a long way from the shire

In fact it'll be doing pretty well to get 30K tbh

If they stick them on a Thursday night there's not a hope. Raiders could be doing a lot more to make attending games more attractive and the chosen entertainment of Canberians though.
