2016 Match Review Committee / Judiciary

I just don't understand why the NRL made such a big deal of the rule.

They then shoot themselves in the foot by suspending one player for an innocuous touch in a team that was almost out of semi-final contention, but then back track when several incidents occur which will rob teams of players who are still competing for semi-final spots.

The inconsistency is at best incompetent, and at worse corrupt.

Either way, it's an embarrassment to the NRL with the major games around the corner.

Surely the NRL could've chosen something more appropriate than touching refs, such as throwing a ball into a player's face or tripping.

I remember Wes Naiqama was given a 2 week suspension for an attempted trip. These days, you don't miss a match for an early guilty plea, but you may miss a game (depending on who you play for) for an innocuous touch.

I love it. Naiqama's a victim for a trip suspension now?

Haha, Bulldogs fans arguing for Greenturds regime, hardly surprising.

Every player who brushes a ref now should go for a week. Presedence set.

On what planet is not agreeing with your ridiculous conspiracy theories "Arguing for Greenberg's regime"?

He hasn't had a great start as NRL CEO, way too much happening in the NRL for him to get any sort of pass mark.

Any other player besides Hayne, JT, Smith (plus protected species like Cronk) and Dogs players would have been charged.

Of course it's a coincedence that Bulldogs players seem to be leniently treated and the Dogs don't play Sunday's after Hoppa was granted Sunday playing release by his club

He is a political animal and it shows, from Hayne signing for an NRL controlled club, Reynolds getting innocuous charges for tripping, etc etc

That's without mentioning the success of his baby , the Bunker

Either put the onus on the player to avoid the ref regardless of circumstances,,,,, or better yet,,, dont come up with these bullsht mid season crackdowns on absolutely nothing.

Nothing people hate more than inconsistency

Bullshit mid-season crackdowns?

Has this not been an issue since the opening weeks?

It's a point blank stupid rule.
None of the ones from the weekend deserve a week off.
Neither did Frizell.
There was no malice in any of them.
I would have more respect for the NRL if they came out and said in hindsight we got the Frizell one wrong.
They wont.
Rule needs to be changed.

No. Have a look at these photos with Thurston, Smith and Klemmer touching referees during 2016.
Thurston.png Smith.png

All players let off.

Memo came out before round 21 basically saying touching refs will not be tolerated.

This is Frizell's heinous crime.

Funny how out of several touches over 2 rounds, Frizell is the only one charged.

In regards to tripping. It used to be an automatic send off. Wes Naiqama was suspended for 2 weeks an attempted trip. Which is worse? Tripping or innocuous touches on a ref??

Klemmer was charged, but don't let facts get in the way of a good story.

The other two were missed at the time and I'm pretty sure only brought to people's attention after the MRC had done it's run for the respective rounds. From memory I think they even conceded they missed the Thurston one but they can't break protocol to go back and get him after the charges are issued.

Anyway, this year alone Klemmer, Sam McKendry, Jack Wighton, James Roberts, Kieran Foran and Lachlan Coote were all charged with Contrary Conduct - Contact with a Match Official - all of these prior to Frizell's incident.

All you've highlighted is that the MRC hasn't managed to capture each instance. I agree under the existing rules that JT and Smith should've copped charges, but they didn't. They were missed.

Where's this memo, btw?

After Klemmer got off, anyone who fought the charge should have been let off too.
And after JT wasn't given a charge, there is no way any of the ones after him should have been charged.

That is some awful, awful awful logic.

Could you imagine if our justice worked like that? Oh old mate got off for that crime so we'll let anyone off who contests their crime.

And the second part? Oh old mate got away with stealing so we won't charge anyone for that anymore..

I swear each year the NRL seems to focus a lot on trying to penalise one thing, but don't look at other types of incidents. One year it was the shoulder charge, the following year it was the one punch rule now its the touching of referees. Its a joke really. They came out and say its a simple rule with an automatic charge yet some incidents aren't looked at, and there are other incidents that are far worse yet players seem to get away with it. The accidental touching of the referee is likely to happen a lot with the two officials on the field and a lot of times are in the players way. Id rather the rule be how you touch the referee, like Klemmer. Looks as though he's trying to block or push the referee, there's no need for him to touch the referee.
