Can the people defending Smith address this?

quite easily.

the nine deal was supposed to be used as leverage with fox. either piss off or pay up. they did neither because smith was fired and fox quickly paid an average sum for the deal.

a lack of NRL (and saturday night) would have crippled fox subscriptions. this will dramatically boost them. we should have held out when we had em by the balls.

It put pressure on fox to up payment and gave the NRL control........as you can see by Murdochs reaction.

Smith was always bagged for everything he did by news they ran an effective campaign.

Take for example his handling of the Cronulla issue over the AFL, at first he was heavily criticised when the reality was he handled it very professionally.

As a percentage, the increase the NRL received from Fox was much more than the increase Nine ended up paying, so if you think the Fox deal was average...

The deal that Smith agreed allowed to much wriggle room for Gyngelll to reduce what Nine ultimately paid.

I think it was amateur hour that the deal Smith agreed with Gyngell allowed Nine to on sell the Sat night game to Fox...Gyngell probably never wanted the Sat night game, but didn't want to see it go to 7 or 10...

Gyngell played Smith for the fool he was

thought he was too smart for his own good and ended up looking like a dunce

and he did manage to turn a $20mill profit into an $18million loss in one year!

Wasn't that because clubs demanded an immediate injection of funds or threaten civil war? Clubs getting greedy is an old thing no matter who is the leader. Probably another reason Smith left.

going off the figures for other STV games i would think a lot of people don't know some games are simulcast

it's not like it has been well advertised by Foxtel

a couple of years ago there were heaps of ads on FTA for their 5 live games but i haven't seen one on FTA saying they now do all 8

Really? Seen heaps. They have also those "We are fox sporting nation" $50 ads. And the "Going to watch the ads this weekend" ad. Which are both about all games being live, hd and ad free.

That Think TV site has the regional number for Thursday night's game as 357k not 205k.

As was the case with AFL when they switched to simulcast, I'm a little suspicious of double counting between FTA and Fox.

Seems like suddenly new viewers come from nowhere. However, I have nothing that in any way proves this idea.

Channel Nine’s NRL audience slips as Fox Sports ups it game and viewing figures

THE new NRL TV broadcasting deal has delivered the spectacular outcome of an extra 2.3 million viewers from the first month of the premiership.

But it’s bad news for Channel Nine executives who have lost 13 per cent of their free-to-air audience to Fox Sports and its advertisement-free coverage.
While viewers are turning off Rabs and Gus, Fox Sports have not only picked up Channel Nine’s old viewers but lifted their own audience by an average of more than 20 per cent per game.
Channel Nine’s numbers have dropped from 9,888,971 to 8,622,242.
The number of people who watched NRL on television in the first four rounds improved from 13,968,541 to 16,266,878, an increase of 16 per cent compared to last season.
That’s 2,298,337 more viewers overall in the first month compared to last year.
Fox Sports ratings are up for their three simulcast games and five exclusive matches.
The Matty Johns Show and NRL 360 have also increased their audiences. Of the magazine shows, only Peter Sterling’s Show on Fox Sports and the Footy Show on Channel Nine have lost viewers.

The huge number of fans now watching on TV is another reason why clubs are struggling to get bums on seats at the venues and face huge challenges in the future.
It also highlights that the plan to build a new 65,000 seat stadium at Moore Park for club games is nothing but a gigantic waste of taxpayer’s money.
Channel Nine originally paid $925 million for the TV rights but dropped their investment to $650 million when Fox Sports got the right to show all eight games live.
Fox Sports CEO Patrick Delany says he is delighted with the early figures.
“The first four rounds of the NRL produced plenty of drama and excitement but that doesn’t automatically translate into more TV viewers,” he said.

Fox Sports is making huge inroads into Nine's NRL audience.
