That sounds exactly how they would behave. The ARL at that time was hostile to the game outside its traditional borders. The fact they even allowed Perth in was a minor miracle. That attitude is still reflected in the funding to ‘affiliated states’ till this day. And it’s also reflected by the attitude of the peanut gallery here now.
If you read about the Super League war (the Mike Colman book is fantastic for anyone who hasnt read it), and go into it with an open mind on who was right or wrong, ARL does not come out looking good at all…
The 1 year contracts for clubs was insane and was the sole reason clubs were able to jump to SL (like, do those 1 year contracts for the teams you are trying to get rid of, but why do that with the clubs you want to keep?!?)
the addition of 4 expansion clubs in 1 year! (They could have had good news stories across a decade, and instead they turned that into a crisis of quality)
the demand that expansion clubs pay for travelling teams?!
And after all of these f*ck ups, they thought they could screw with Murdoch and the clubs would stay loyal? A bunch of f*ckin idiots….
