2017-2018 Fullback

Provided Ponga doesn't get here until 2018, who will play fullback for the next season/season and a half?

And if Ponga does get here for 2017 surely we don't want him playing fullback week in week out in the NRL?

If Ponga gets here for 2017 I'd like to see:

1.Pete Mata'utia
2.Kalyn Ponga
3.Nathan Ross
4.Dane Gagai
5.Ken Sio

With Ponga also spending some time in the NYC.

If he doesn't come here for 2017, replace him with Gagan/Elliott.

And in 2018 I'd like him in the NRL side week-in-week out playing wing with some stints at fullback.

In conclusion, I think Pete should be training for fullback this pre-season. I think Ross should be penciled in as a centre for the rest of his career/time with us.

I'm not overly confident, but I'm suspecting that Ponga will end up here for 2017 at this point. I feel like the Cowboys need a forward more than they need a backup winger that won't be with them long term, and that they've only got another year or 2 of premiership window tops and should be going all in on what they need immediately.

We won't mind letting go of just about anyone that isn't Sione or doesn't have the last name Saifiti, I would think. If he's willing, I think Korbin will end up being the one as much as I'd like it to be Stockwell. All just gut feeling at this point... now that the ink is dry on Pongas contract, I imagine there will be discussions to this effect taking place.

If he doesn't end up here early, then we'll run a combination of Sio, Pete and Ross through the year with none settling comfortably... with Gags maybe 4th or even 5th pick if there's a young kid to put there instead. Maybe Gagan gets a look in too, I don't know much about him.

From what I've read, Phythian is a big chance. Fullback is listed as his position in the squad list, the only player in the squad with fullback as his first choice.

If Pete is the go, don't expect much. Would be the worst fullback in the comp by a long way. I've got nothing against Pete but that's just the reality.

Getting released by the second worst team in the comp isn't a ringing endorsement for Pete.

You've got Sio, Gagai and Ross as the three legit first graders to fill the five spots.

Then the uninspiring list of Pete/Pat/Chanel/Gagan/Elliott/Denniss/Pythian/Meaney for the other two.

Personally I'd like to see RossDawg at the back, at least he cares.

The second Ponga steps into this club he will have the first-grade fullback jersey.

A year in NYC then a year on the wing? Less than zero chance.

I never said a year in NYC. I'm thinking for the kid's best interests he shouldn't have to spend 12 months in a shitty side playing a difficult position like fullback. Neither Latrell or Trbojevic (both superstars and both much larger and physically stronger guys) did that. Both spent time on the wings and in the NYC. The kid is like 80kgs and has played 2 games of FG both of which were on the wing.

I mean if Ponga turns up tomorrow he is our first-grade fullback. He won't spent 2017 in NYC and he won't spend 2018 on the wing.

How many kids with half Ponga's talent did Brown chuck in the deep end last year?

Ponga moved here because he backs himself and knows he will get a crack straight away. I doubt Brown has told him 2019 for the fullback jersey. If he had he would've stayed at NQ.

This is why I want Ponga to stay up north for 2017. Let him play fullback in the Qld Cup and then fill in at fullback/wing for the Cowboys when needed. A lot better for his development than having him thrown in at fullback for Newcastle and getting smashed every week.

I don't disagree. 2017 is not our year anyway.

As far as I see it, if we don't get Ponga it just leaves us space to make an off-season/mid-season signing anyway. Keep Korbin and sign someone too.

But if he does get here he will be our #1 fullback no doubt.

THE father of teenage whiz-kid Kalyn Ponga claims the Cowboys are neglecting his son’s welfare and is calling on the club to do the right thing and release him to Newcastle.

One of the hottest young properties in the game, Ponga is under contract to North Queensland next season but has signed a four-year deal with the Knights from 2018.
The family is holding out hope the Cowboys will relent and allow Ponga to link with the NRL cellar-dwellers a season early.

TARGET: Clubs line-up for hitman Napa
Andre Ponga says his son is paying the price for turning his back on the club but claims the Cowboys only have themselves to blame.
“Things went pear-shaped when we didn’t accept an offer from the Cowboys to sign a two-year contract extension back in April,” he told The Sunday Telegraph.
“Kalyn didn’t have a manager at the time and we as a family weren’t going to make a decision on his long-term future until Kalyn had a manager in place.

Kalyn Ponga during Cowboys training.“Pretty much the relationship went sour with the club from that point on.”
A year out of high school and having just turned 18, Kalyn was at university part-time, studying to be a PE teacher.
But Ponga senior said there was no encouragement from Cowboys management for anything other than football.
“They didn’t allow him to do virtually anything outside of playing footy,” he said.
“He loves footy so applying himself to that comes easy. But education is hard for Kalyn and he has worked hard in the past but they just made it more difficult.
“As a family, we have always preached that footy is always the B option and education the A option.
“The Cowboys knew that was a priority for us when he signed in 2013.
“But since rejecting April’s offer, they don’t want to know about it and it’s left Kalyn disillusioned because they are not offering any encouragement to him.
“Unfortunately, a lot of the off-field stuff that was promised, that was going to help him develop as a person off the field, has not been adhered to at the Cowboys.”
Ponga senior claimed Kalyn seriously considered switching codes because of the off-field struggles.

There were opportunities at the Queensland Reds and Brisbane Lions and he thought long and hard about a move to the AFL before being “blown away” by the welfare set-up and opportunities at the Knights.
“Through all of this, it has been a priority for Kalyn to stay humble and keep to our values because as a family, that’s what is important to us,” Ponga senior said.
“The Knights actually gave us faith that there is good in the game. I can’t emphasise that more.
“They weren’t his first pick. Going down to Newcastle for that weekend, the club wasn’t even on his radar.
“But within an hour of being there, we had met the CEO, the coach, recruiter, general manager, club ambassador and welfare officer and were just blown away by how genuine they all are and how comfortable it all felt.
“He can see the growth possibilities of the club and the opportunities for himself personally on and off the field.
“We went over their system and it excited us and coming from what we have come from over the past seven or eight months, they should be very proud of their system.”
Despite suggestions a deal with the Knights was done several weeks ago, Kalyn only made his final decision to sign last weekend.
“We were fearful of his welfare. He was worried how he would be treated by the Cowboys with a year to go on his contract if he made it official he was going elsewhere,” Ponga senior said.

As for an early release, the Ponga family is not holding out much hope. “He’s only 18 but his welfare hasn’t been a priority and we’ve had to accept that,” he said. If they don’t release him, we feel it will be out of spite.
“But deep down, we always knew they would dig their heels in because of how they have been towards him over the past seven months.
“He has been resilient and professional and we have supported him strongly. The family is prepared to do the same for him over the next 12 months if he is forced to stay on.
“But it excites the family that the Knights, being the No. 1 club for welfare in 2016 is a good balance that will help Kalyn evolve on and off the field.”

KP's Dad is scum. He constantly says things to the media which damages KP's relationship with his current club. I thought he'd keep his mouth shut now that KP has a manager but he's talking to the media more than ever.

He was talking about wanting KP to play under Wayne Bennett in the middle of last year before he had even made his Cowboys debut and still had 18 months left on his contract.

Good luck dealing with him throughout the next few years, he's a pain. No doubt he'll be looking to break the deal if KP is having a hard time.

I'm not a hater, I want KP to succeed and I believe he will make a difference at the Knights, he's awesome.

It's good what he said about Newcastle as a club, but I can't see why he needs to publicly bag the cowboys, especially when Kalyn has 12 months to run on his contract.

The positive for us is that it allows there to be pressure placed on the cowboys to grant him an early release from his contract without Newcastle doing all the pressuring and looking like the bad guys. I thought Canberra did that very well with Tapine- massive pressure on Newcastle to release him because of his manager, and all Canberra needed to do was make a comment about there being room in their salary cap if the opportunity presented itself.

Dad certaintly hasn't missed the Cowboys in that article. Not a good look for anyone.

On the flip side, it makes the staff at our club sound like they know what they are doing, are very professional and are all about the welfare of the player.

As for Ponga arriving this season, I would be shocked if Brown played him at 1 week in, week out.

Honestly it's nothing but the Dad trying to put pressure on for an early release.

I know some people here are happy for him to stay at the Cowboys next year as long as he's given a chance to keep developing but honestly I can't see any good coming of that at the moment for any party.

Ponga will get more money here next year, he is also in for a less than comfortable 12 months at the Cowboys. He knows it, we all know it, the Dad onviously knows it. Obviously the situation is shit for the Cowboys, we've been there with Tapine recently, but honestly I don't see any value of forcing them to stay when they've already made their mind up to leave...unless of course the departing player could be crucial in winning a premiership that next season but that's not Ponga with the Cowboys (nor was it Tapine).

The real issue here is the ridiculous rule that allows players to sign with another club with a season still to go on their contracts. Creates an ugly and awkward situation all round.

Agree that it creates situations that aren't ideal, but I still like it better than the old June 30 system.

I wonder if clubs will be able to put a clause in place that limits early moves, or at least compensates the club with a transfer fee? A player swap is always a popular form of compensation, but not something that can be guaranteed. If the cowboys pick up stockwell or sims next year on a cheap deal you'd have to think that they'll be pretty happy, whereas with Tapine we were the only party that didn't benefit from him leaving the club early.

You can't benefit much when the former powers that were, decided to pay everyone massive overs, rep money and more, for players that were simply not much chop. Didn't leave any money to secure players that should have been worth a bit of coin.

The shoe is now on the other foot though.

The minute he is eligible to play for the Knights he is playing fullback. Absolutely no doubt about it.

As I said, should he show up for the 2017, I will be surprised if he plays the season in the 1 jersey week in, week out.

In fact, it would have to be a no-brainer that he won't and should not.

If he's good enough then I cant see why he shouldnt play week in week out. He does seem a bit on the small side at the moment so could benefit from some more time to fill out.

I honestly don't know why we'd hold him back if he was up to it (and at this stage we don't know he won't be).

Bennett played Sione back there even younger for a few games and he handled it absolutely fine.

Ponga is the same age and is actually a natural fullback.

If he were to come in 2017 I think that would be the perfect time to get him experience there considering we're not going to be competitive next year anyway. Pressure is much lower than say 2018 when we might actually be competitive.

If he was playing hooker I'd completely agree with you but I don't really think playing him out of position on the wing or something will do much good for him either.
