2017 Crowd Watch

Was only 3 years ago these teams were playing in front of 83k
it was 83813 ..the largest crowd to ever file into ANZ in its present configuration
but that was a GF hardly a fair comparison
they'd play in front of that many any time they played in a premiership decider minimum & probs plenty more in a bigger venue

they did play in front of 51,686 in a club game in 2013 but that was good friday
a fairer comparison , but still a bit skewed
but tonight is an utter embarrasment
a disgrace

I look at it like this..both clubs have a combined membership number of 50,000+

They should be able to get at least 40-50% of that...surely?

Even on an uninspiring Thursday night

The NRL couldn't care less about improving crowds. Can't think of a major sports competition in the world that places as little importance on game day attendance as the NRL admin.

This.

No sporting code in the world would be dumb enough to schedule regular matches at a time on Friday when most people only care about getting back home from work to unwind ASAP

The game is fine. Cronulla and Canterbury pulled 20k during Origin on a Sat night. Potential is there, administration just needs to focus on attendance as a priority instead of letting the TV stations and interests define the schedule. I have doubts that the NRL gaining full control of the draw will see any real tangible differences.

Embarrassing crowd. Let's hope this year serves as a wake up call to the NRL. I think there are multiple factors at play here and it's not just the timeslots (though obviously that's a pretty big f**king deal).

The NRL need to realise that it makes the game look amateur and like less of an event. This leads to even worse crowds and IMO it affects TV ratings as well. People want to watch something that feels like an event. I think that's partly why they ratings are down despite the fact that crowds are also down and we caved in and bent over backwards for the TV networks.

I watched the funniest animal show thingy on Channel 7

the NRL looked like a Jim Beam Cup match
it could have been the best RL game ever played , a lot of people neutral fans like me wouldn't have cared or watched it simply because of the way it looked on TV, amateurish , 2nd rate
uninspiring

this has to be fixed
the NRL has to be very , very deliberate in the selection of the 65 premium games for FTA in 2018
& send the strongest possible message to Ch 9
This has to stop !!
or we won't waste our best games on your station !!
scrap Thursdays , make them Saturday nights , & we will give you games worthy of the term .. premium

We focus a lot on the shit games they choose but don't give credit where it's due when they get it right I reckon - MEL v NQ and CRO v CAN last week were both the right choice. Broncos/Sharks tonight as well.

You shouldn't need to smuggle drink and food in if only they give value for money in hospitality.
Feels good to rebel though!

Risk/reward is beneficial... not as though you are going to a filthy foreign prison if you get caught smuggling either.
