Crowds are literally a self fulfilling prophecy;

If all you are comparing just watching a game .. tv at home will win every time ..

But you need to think about what being there is all about

It's about feeling part of something bigger .. it's about going and feeling impressed.. seeing crowds hearing people talk .. listening to the rise and fall of the atmosphere..

People who worship God.. could pray at home watching a religious channel and it would probably be just as good but they want to feel part of something

People go to so many things that they don't love .. but they know it will be a good night out.. as they will be connected to a group of 500 people for a few hours

And the more people there ... The better it is

All nrl are selling is atmosphere ..

They just don't know how to create it or sell it..

I think you have a point. I was in Bali weekend before last for work and there were a couple of guys from US and England in the group.

The hotel bar had AFL and NRL on, and the NRL looked amateur compared and these guys were more interested in watching the AFL largely due to it seeming better through crowd perception.
But the suits at the NRL don't realise that watching a top league sport with poor crowds doesn't come over well when watching on TV, makes the game seem amateur and perceived not popular.
I used to cringe seeing Russell Crowe show off South Sydney to his American showbusiness friends like Tom Cruise and Charles Barkley and others in an empty stadium.
