Got to say, when the Blues won that dead rubber last year, there was a sense that it was like Game 3 '84 and the Blues went onto dominate the next two series. We could be something similar here, especially as Queensland turns to a new generation.
The end of Game 3 last year was the most bittersweet I've ever felt after an Origin game. Considering the amount of 50/50 calls that went their way all night, NSW should've won comfortably instead of relying on "The try from Heaven Pt 2" to avoid a whitewash. It was an arsey, arsey win and if I were a Maroons fan I would've been PISSED at the way my team had gone within a bee's dick of closing the door on a clean-sweep, before NSW stuck an arm out at the last moment to stop the door slamming shut. That game saved Daley's job, as far as I'm concerned.
Tonight, even with all the talk about Qld's casualty ward, I didn't see NSW racking up a score like they did, considering last years' ineptitude. Even after that first half, I thought Qld would push them closer the rest of the game. But come the last 20 minutes, Qld were looking like Bellamy's Blues circa 2010- they looked uninspired, rudderless, they only showed some flair inside their 10 in the dying minutes with NSW tiring. That defence at the end as well...can't remember that kind of determination in a match already won.
Tonight though, was the best NSW performance I've seen since at least 2005- possibly even longer, as that night at Suncorp Joey ran the show. I don't want to get too confident yet, because I was similarly confident after Game 1 in 2013 and that ended up going to shit (Dugan and Fergo got on the piss, Hayne was ruled out, we brought in Nathan f**king Merrit to mark Inglis on the wing for Game 2 and Pearce shat the bed in Game 3- but still...). One more game to go- home turf- and hopefully the NSW squad stay fit, mentally prepared and mindful that they need to put in another performance at least close to that for 80 minutes to get the shield back.
Shout out also to Cooper Cronk..one of the few Maroons who was a threat tonight, and as sore as he probably is right now he at least is guaranteed one hell of an awesome sympathy f**k when he gets home...
