Its staggering really, 6pm that mates out for a Friday night out cant get to and 8pm that families wont attend as finish will be too late for little kids. But that's the point isn't it? As a competition run for TV they are perfect.

Have Thursdays proved anymore popular than Mondays for crowds?

Nope - they're f**king shit and everyone hates them

Why not promote 6:30pm Sunday Night Football as the game of the week like in the states with the NFL where it is one of the highest rated programs? You could even have a post game NRL recap show that would keep a lot of footy heads out of bed. the first 16 games could be announced with the schedule release but the rest would be genuinely the game of the week. Just a thought.

This is a pretty good idea and historically, back when channel 10 used to have the free to air ratings, remember they used to show a replay of Sunday's match of the round (played at 3pm) between 6 and 7:30pm.... It was their guaranteed ratings winning program of the week.... Then channel 9 got the ratings and completely bastardised the coverage, initially they used to show the Sunday match of the round replay between 6:30 and 7:30 which meant we only saw about 34 minutes of the actual game after you factored in all the ads.... all because they didn't want to move their 6pm news bulletin or 60 minutes from its 7:30 timeslot.... geez we were treated like mushrooms back in the day... kept in the dark and fed nothing but shyte!

We need to be smarter about the schedules

I would include match of the round Tier 2 Cup broadcasts

Friday 6pm should be reserved for NSW Cup match of the week live

Saturday should start at 5:30pm as Junior football doesnt stop till 3pm

So I would linclude QLD Cup match of the round at 1pm NZ Cup match of the round 11am

Remember listening to the radio when they used to cover Sunday arvo games and the Around the Grounds used to take about 5 minutes before you had all the scores!! LOL!

I'm semi-embarrassed to say that's how I used to spend a lot of Sunday arvos in winter.

6pm Sunday is a poor choice imo
I like to go to a game, have a few beers with the lads and cruise on home after
Getting home at 10pm on a Sunday half cut and then getting up for work on the Monday - errr nah

Friday and Saturday night games all season imo for the Roosters
Unless of course it's Easter Sunday or a public holiday on the Monday then go for your life

No offence, but that's called being an alcoholic. If you can't go to a game to watch your favourite team play without having a few drinks (especially on a Sunday night ???) then I think it's more on you not the NRL.

Fair enough Friday night or Saturday, but we are thinking about the bigger picture. Sunday 6 or 6:30pm works perfectly fine and is family friendly.

This is where Perth could be very beneficial to fox as we get a very family friendly 4pm Sunday KO live game at 6pm on east coast. Would only be every other week but still a good outcome.

Would still overlap with the WCE/Freo 4:40pm (2:40pm WA) timeslot though, not the greatest idea to go against the big show in town each fortnight.

I think the 6pm Friday game could be a great idea.
- make it a family game. Kids in free/or cheap or some special family deal. A lot of fans complain about taking kids to game because it finishes too late, this is great opportunity to get more kids to a game on a Friday night.

- I don't think 6pm is too early at all. Most tradies even office workers in Qld at least normally knock off Friday's between 12am-4pm. I personally think more fans will rock up to this game rather then Thursday or Monday games.

- this time slot would be great for double headers at Suncorp/ANZ/SFS. After the weekend crowds at Homebush & sfs they need to try something different to boost crowds this could be an answer. Imagine having the dogs vs NZ at 6 then rabbits vs Broncos at 8. Would get huge crowds and maxamize Tv audiences.

- 6pm on a Friday could be outstanding for the Tv ratings. Not a lot to watch at 6pm Maybe the news, nothing to compete with. personally I will love this timeslot. Having back to back games on Friday night that doesn't finish after11pm sounds good to me. I normally start looking at me watch Friday night if I'm home thinking f**k when's the footy start is 8 yet having a 6pm game will solve that.

You say it may work in Qld because of when everyone knocks off? Yet you talk about Sydney. They have little frakken correlation.

Well I can assure you it won't work in NSW let alone Sydney. Peak Hour in Sydney starts at 4pm and goes through to 7pm, and I can assure you public transport is at its busiest between 5pm and 7pm. You are not going to be able to get people out to ANZ "easy" at that time as the trains going out that way are usually already full. How do I know? Oh only commuting out that way for 20+ years from the Sydney CBD.

The SFS? Bzzt, wrong idea. The car park that is ANZAC Parade at that time of day won't get people wanting to go there, in fact it will turn people off going as they crawl along in their car or in their bus. I know as that is what I did last Thursday and it was just after 5pm. I've enough experience of heading out to the SFS on a weeknight to know how long it takes.

As to any of the other grounds? Good luck if you work in the Sydney CBD. It takes over an hour to get from the City to Penrith Station alone. It takes around 40 minutes to get to Parramatta Station. Going by bus to Brookvale? Good luck in that traffic. In good traffic conditions it takes 40-55 minutes from the CBD.

Fact is despite "flex" time, many people work till 5pm or later, some because they start later than 9am.

Finally double headers getting great crowds eh? Yeah, like the NRL has never tried them before (cough cough, Round 1 2000 ANZ stadium).

Double headers at Suncorp seem to work fine, crowds are great in Qld all hear is nsw fans whinge and cry about everything nothing is ever good enough. Maybe if the NRL had any idea they would cull or drop a couple of Sydney teams to the nsw cup. Maybe then the undeserving nsw fans would stop taking the best RL in the world at there door step for granted.

Geez, you're the life of the party @Captain Apollo...

Anyway, they've been pretty clear about that timeslot that it's likely to go to alternate markets most weeks, and limited times in Sydney.

I happen to agree with @Marlins - Friday is always a POETS day in many industries and could actually work, particularly in QLD.

Couple that with NZ games and even Melbourne where public transport makes AAMI Park so easily accessible (and the NRL game would finish before the AFL starts), and there's actually good potential for the timeslot.

I drive 4 hours 2-4 times a year to watch the cowboys play in Townsville and I'm not even a cowboys fan. You Nswrl fans are just spoiled.

Not really a fair generalisation. When I lived in NSW I drove 2 hours round trip to watch the Bulldogs most weeks, I'm sure there are plenty that do the same.

Also worth noting there are 120-odd games in Sydney each year, while Queensland only gets 35-40.

The 6pm kick off is such a stupid idea. I work in the Sydney CBD and I'd be able to make kick off at SFS - just. If I left work on time. Homebush isn't really do-able due to probably having to change at Lidcome or Central for a direct service.

Leichhardt would be a possibility with the tram from Central and Kogarah could be a chance but I'd have to leave work early. The others, wouldn't have a hope of getting there on time...

Did you actually read the content of any posts about it?

The whole point of the timeslot is that it will, for the most part, avoid Sydney as a market.

No, just calling it as I see it. The absolute die hard fans will compensate for the early start time, but those slightly less committed won't. For example, if you could only get 6,000 odd to a Roosters v Broncos match at the SFS for an 8pm kick-off Thursday night, I dare say you would have gotten a smaller crowd had it been for 6 pm on Friday.

Further, have a read of people from outside who have posted in this thread. Only Marlins has been "positive" about it in Qld. Many others haven't been, especially those in NZ.

p.s.

If you want to talk about travel, when you do a Sydney-Brisbane-Sydney bus trip to watch your team play the Broncos in Brisbane without staying over night, then come talk to me. I've done it. Twice :p
