And here's the answer to why the match was played last night:
Cable ratings - NRL and AFL virtually the same 258K vs 275K
FTA: Syd: 223K vs 34K Bris 200K vs 28K
Regionals not reported yet
Remarkably Thursday NRL is not shown on any FTA in Melbourne, Adelaide or Perth

There may have been 80K more people at the ground but that was more than watched the game in the 1st and 3rd cities

Regionals 353K for NRL vs 198K
Totals 862 vs 816 for NRL despite not being shown in half the country

A moral win for NRL!

Might want to update your data there mate.

Thursday NRL was on FTA in Melbourne, Adelaide and Perth on Gem!

But I guess biased data to make NRL look good is better than actually looking at the full facts?

I think the fact they still got 13k despite the Tigers playing across the road is testament to their growth. They couldn't have avoided going head to head with any Round 1 game - Essendon tonight, Collingwood Saturday, Melbourne Sunday. I doubt they would've got anything north of 15k on any other night.

What I agree on is making it Thursday. Poor choice for a GF rematch IMO
Storm should start with 2 home games prior to the afl starting, then get out of town for afl round 1.

Multichannel ratings aren't included by Nine on all programs rankings. In contrast, Seven included Seven Mate ratings with their main channel ratings for the afl, so it appears higher up the program rankings.
40k watched across the other states on Gem.
Good question and it is one I have raised in the past. It gets back to how networks code. My understanding is Seven and TEN code as “network” so that a show on multiplatforms can be merged where applicable, such as AFL. Nine codes as channels meaning NRL is separated. I think it does them a disservice as you are pointing out, and have quizzed them on this in the past.

I'm not saying people don't like popular things. That's a fact of life. I'm saying kids don't look at the TV and complain about the crowd size.

They may not complain but they are certainly impressed or not impressed! Absolutely! Image is everything. The AFL myth and spin doctors can wield their publicity machine with big crowd scenes very easily with kids and unsuspecting adults as well.

I find it remarkable that the NRL is not aired on any of the secondary channels of the Nine Network in "non Rugby league" states! It reeks of a poor regard for the code by the channel nine network. Furthermore I think the NRL should have insisted on this coverage to occur during negotiations. Even throw it in now as extra value to the current coverage set up?
Although I just read a query as to reasons why the NRL on channel 9 does not include other state ratings figures. Apparently channel 7 class their other channels as a network and channel 9 class the channels as separate channels. Seems odd?

My children are immensely disappointed in the crowd at ANZ. My youngest Brayden just said ‘why are there so few people there daddy. Is it because of mum’s drinking problem?’
To be fair, it is a ridiculous kick-off time for a work-day.

I cannot understand why, they have 3 Qld teams and didn't use that to their advantage. Sydney match should start at 7pm, and Qld match at 8pm local time (9pm Sydney). Problem solved, everyone's happy, TV viewers and those attending matches.

I thought crowds would jump up higher once AAMI opened. NRL simply has no traction here outside of NSW/QLD/UK/NZ expats. There is no RL club within 27km of AAMI. It will never get the crowds Swans get in Sydney.

that bumbling Victorian trash , only has traction in Sydney , Brisbane
& pretty much everywhere else in NSW , QLD & the ACT

with ex pat Victorians
