Oceania is more descriptive and just because your average league fan is as dense as a house brick doesn’t mean calling it pacific is any better. There’s a hell of a lot of nations that are in the pacific that won’t be included in this comp.

Yeh, but there are a bunch of nations in the world that arent part of the World Cup. I dont really see the problem...

But the World Cup is open to them, that isn’t what is being discussed. What’s the problem with using a term that actually fits?

Australia v Tonga "barely broken even" according to the Aussie press...and that's with the Aussie's taking a 75% pay cut..

Australia playing 3 tests against GB,England or NZ,with the Aussie's having their full $20k match fee, means the 3 tests will cos the ARLC over a $1m in match fees...that's why they think it's not commercially viable...they've priced themselves out

Maybe we could look at sending teams other than the Kangaroos to get around this....

NSW/QLD used to tour England and NZ long before the Roos did. Surely there are more options than just the f*cking Kangaroo Snobs.

That article also says Cook Islands will take Australia's place in the Oceania Cup for 2020.

So that surely means none of the top 3 will be relegated.

I don't really care about the name, I just care that we will finally have this tournament on a regular basis. The fact that Aus & NZ are involved is even better. We can improve it as we go. Future adjustments I would like to the structure are:

  • Teirs increased from 3 to 4 (e.g. Teir 1: Aus, NZ, Tonga, Fiji & Teir 2: Samoa, PNG, Cook Islands & Niue) which replecates the European championship
  • Replecate the idea in Europe with England participating to raise the profile of the Euro Championshiops
  • Use the two regular tournaments as qualifiers for the confed cup / 6 nations; top 2 from each, 3rd place from each play-off for spot 5 and a world qualifier which would be the winner of a playoff between the Americas and MEA winners. So as an example Confed Cup / 6 Nations lineup: England and France (1st & 2nd in Europe), Aus, NZ (1st & 2nd in Oceania), Tonga (winner of the Euro v Oceania 3rd place playoff against Wales), Lebanon (winner of the MEA championship and then defeating USA in the world qualifying playoff)

Lets talk about this more because its more interesting than arguing over whatever Oceanic means.

Post season Week 2

Oceania Cup Rd2 - NZ v Australia - This match is in Australia. Western Sydney Stadium?
Oceania Cup Rd2 - Samoa v Fiji - If costs are going to be an issue, play as warm to GB v Tonga?
Lions - GB v Tonga - in Hamilton? Most Tonga fans will be thinking of the match against Australia.

Post Season Week 3
Lions Midweek - GB v Fiji - Wherever the largest proposition of Fijians live in NZ
Oceania Cup Rd3 - Tonga v Aus - Mt Smart Stadium.
Oceanis Cup Rd3 - PNG v Samoa - If not in PNG, then play as double header before GB game
Lions - GB v NZ 1st Test - Wellington, or perhaps Christchurch

Post Season Week 4

Isn't it origin that's $50k and tests $20k ?

Not sure what it is now but D Smith wanted to make the Kangaroos Jersey the pinnacle and pretty sure it used to be origin $30k and tests $40k.

How can a sold out Mt Smart stadium not at least break even? 30k tickets at an avg $35 plus corporates etc. = well over $1mill in revenue.

Maybe if they didnt give away the media rights to international RL and actually had a consistent and sellable product to TV then it would be more viable?

This where the RLIF need to step in. Once the NRL tv contract is up for renewal the RLIF should be insisting that international rights are sold separately, preferably by the RLIF themselves. The same goes for England.
