The Kennel is going into meltdown over this trial :joy:

I think our priorities are.

1. NO INJURIES
2. Sort out the forward pack/bench
3. Sort out how we replace our good Mormon boy DWZ for round 1.

This Dogs team is an insult and will get smashed by 50:

1 Kerrod Holland
2 Josh Bergamin
3 Lachlan Lewis
4 John Olive
5 Tom Carr
6 Josh Cleeland
7 Jeremy Marshall-King
8 Francis Tualau
9 Fa'amanu Brown
10 Renouf To’omaga
11 Jayden Okunbor
12 Rhyse Martin
13 Greg Eastwood

Reserves

Ofahiki Ogden
Asipeli Fine
Lachlan Burr
Jack Nelson
Jarred Anderson
Bronson Garlick
Joel Luani D'Rhys Miller

Why are we playing a Dogs reserve grade outfit? Shouldn't our preparation be against a much sterner lineup?

Was he playing middle or edge in the WC? I prefer JFH in the middle, his energy and aggression really help our defence when he harnesses it properly and it gives Kikau the edge spot on the bench.

Assuming Yeo, CHN are our starting edge forwards when fit and the the middle is RCG,Merrin,Tamou. Bringing JFH and Kikau on after 20-30 should really add some impact.
I liked the strategy of bringing RCG on after 20 and leaving him on for 60. He seemed to get better and better throughout the game.
JFH as a starting prop, with his aggression and heavy D would soak up a lot of the energy at the start of the match.
Bringing kikau and RCG on after 20 could potentially be huge.
Merrin and yeo could be our 80 min players keeping CHN and kikau fresh for attacking with about 40 mins each.

I didn't know that. A guy his size who is mobile enough to play in the centres and has a big enough motor to play 80 minutes is nothing short of freakish. If he stays fit he should have a big career.

Sounds like the 2nd coming of Frank Pritchard.

I think the Dogs will put up some sort of fight. There has to be a benefit for us, just simulating game conditions. If the score gets too lop-sided, just kick the ball on the 3rd or 4th and practice long periods of defense. Maybe try out some fancy kick chases, 40/20s etc. Keeping them to zero would be ideal, and not to get too cocky if we flog them.

IMO trials are somewhat meaningless. The first 5 rounds of the regular season are a lottery anyway, as to how you will perform / results of matches, & we've shown you can essentially lose 80% game in the first couple of months & still make the finals.

The fact we have a new halves combo adds weight to the game time though. We need them to fire and players/coach have said they want to start the season better.

I concur. Last trial a few new boys you think the Dogs would want at least a half of football to blow the rust off and gel some new combos.

Yeah, new coach and a fairly new roster including an all new spine.

You can lose plenty of early games and still make the finals.

But very rarely does a team that loses plenty of early games win the title.

The worst record for a premier after 10 rounds in the last decade was Souths with 5/10

The average is about 7/10.

I can think of a few theories why Dean Pay has sent out a reserve grade side.

The first is that he wants to see who in the reserve grade side shines against an almost full strength Panthers side. Those reserve graders who haven't played first grade before wouldn't otherwise get tested in that way against another team, without being debuted in a regular season match.

Admittedly it is a trial, so won't be exactly the same intensity, but it'll be a good test. It'll also help give him an idea of where some of those reserve graders are in the event that they are needed to step up during the regular season.

Second is that he is also playing games, and doesn't want Melbourne to know too far in advance what the Dogs starting side is going to be next week. Bellamy is one of those coaches that prepares a lot for the particular opposition to be played, and the more time he has to know about what the Dogs side is likely to be the better prepared the Storm will be to target perceived weaknesses. Brad Arthur was, after all, at the Panthers v Roosters game filming our trial team in action to try to get info.

My guess is that he has his side almost finalised and those who are certainties for round 1 aren't playing in the trial.

Even in a trial, you don't get to pick the opposition side. If the club are unhappy with the Dogs side, I guess they'll play trials against someone else next year.
