Wasn't the score MX but the way we looked out there. Set plays not quite going to hand but being there. Sivo's 1st try was great vision. Ferguson dropped it mid field Maloney called it and fired a pass to the winger where he would be.

Stuff like that is what we lacked in the past

So we looked good out there eh? Sounds very promising.

Problem is keeping him would likely mean having to let Mansour or DWZ walk. Dallin just signed a 3 year deal too.
If he turns out to be someone above average,I'm sure something would be done to hang onto him.

One thing is for sure,we'll more than likely need him during the SOO and when NZ have their test matches.

One thing that could be possible is a move for Mansour into the backrow. I could see him a a bustling lock.

But we might simply not have the money. Sounds like things are tight with the salary cap.

Sivo won't be ready for Round 1. Defence is ordinary when the highlights come up you will see what I mean.

Both their 2nd half tries were misses from him. Not FG quality yet. Should play next trial so can see what he has. The backup fullback Aekins looks next in line out of NSW Cup players

I just got back from the trial.

Positives

There were a lot of positives to take away from the game.

The team looks very fit across the park (although Dylan Edwards knee and leg was still heavily strapped, and McKendry's knee was also heavily strapped), possibly with the exception of Peachey, who looks like he has gained some size, but was regularly slower getting back into the line in defence than the rest of the team and missed the tackle that lead to the Rooster's first try (although was still his usual X factor in attack and supported Clearly well for a try).

In the first half we played mostly first graders with reserves, and in the second we played mostly reserve graders.

I think we made only one error the whole game - dropping the ball coming out of our own end early in the first half. Otherwise our handling was superb.

Our team is huge across the park - between the first graders and reserves I think it was the biggest team on average I have ever seen Penrith put on a field. Our forward depth in the reserves looks incredible.

Based on the limited minutes played by both of Maloney and Cleary together, it was difficult to tell how well they have combined, but equally I didn't notice anything of concern. Cleary did almost all (perhaps all) of the kicking in general play when he was on the field, and did the goal kicking when on the field, so I expect he will remain the first choice kicker in general play.

Jerome Laui looked excellent with the ball - he played the end of the first half and all of the second half and lead the team around the park. He also set up some excellent scoring plays.

Wade Egan played hooker for all of the first half, when we had more of our first graders on the field. He looked very good. Katoa did almost all of the hooking in the second half, and also looked very good.

Our defence in the middle was excellent. We were also consistently good at shutting down the play and driving the opposition back in defence.

Areas for improvement

We were still quite flat in attack. Query how much you can read into this game, however.

Tries were scored against us when the Roosters went out wide. Again, I don't read too much into that because we didn't have our best centre / winger combinations out there, but our sliding out wide and 1 on 1 defence out wide was questionable.

Sivo looked good with the ball but didn't inspire confidence in defence.

I am therefore a little bit concerned how we will go in the centre / winger area early in the season until our first choice (DWZ, Blake, Peachy / Whare / Mansour) combination is all fit and available. .

Agree with all that. Looks likely Blake on the wing from what I saw.

Egan put the kick in for Leota's try. Maloney had a few to pin them in the corner but yep clear it is Cleary's team

I wasn’t talking about round 1, just sometime in the future.

When we had a spine of Cleary, Edwards, Egan, Maloney we looked smooth in attack. We kind of did all game but I was looking more at the particulars of these guys and it was good. Timing, passing, kicking. Everything was how you'd want it from your playmakers. Not getting too crazy but they do look like they've worked hard and built a combination. Just need to see how they go when 2 points are on the line now.

Exactly. I saw Brad Arthur on the hill filming it. So we can be sure they will be prepared round 1.

I take nothing away from this evening one way the other.

The only positive from tonight was that it was a true contact game so to speak as you cannot simulate a true contract game in the training environment.

Tonight was as low key as you could get.

He could film all the video he likes there was nothing to take out of that game from either side. It was what it was, it largely meaningless trial.

Trials are all about fitness and combinations. Roosters had most of their biggest guns out, but still it’s good to have a run out.
