2019 ASHES: 4th Test Australia v England, Old Trafford Sept 4-9

A wicket or two. I reckon he's got Leach's number though.

England are probably 50-100 runs away from saving the game. No way we declare with any less than a 400 run lead which won't give us enough time to bowl them out again.
If they're still batting at lunch, I'd say England have saved the game and we're down to a winner take all 5th test and a Smith 200 squandered.

I think the lead will come down more to time than runs. At least it should. 350 lead will be enough if they only have 80 overs to chase them, but obviously that’ll make it harder for us to bowl them out.

I don't think Paine will be risking the chance of Stokes teeing off again will play it ultra conservative.

When it comes our turn to bat we might split the batting up where Warner, Head and Wade try to score quickly and Harris, Lab and Smith anchor the innings. And yes I know how ridiculous the thought of Harris anchoring an innings is so it'll probably be over to Smith and Lab sooner than later.

Warner trying to score runs quickly might be just what he needs though to get in some kind of form.

Pretty amazing - surprising how few tests have been played overall though - he's not actually that disadvantaged...

minus smith, the other 9/10 top run scorers for the year average out at 10.333 innings for their runs.
Smith, so far, has had 4.
It gets worse when you limit it to the top other top 4 of the top 5 run scorers.

Stokes 13 innings 520 runs
Head 11 innings 503 runs
Burns 15 innings 480 runs
Root 15 innings 457 runs
...

Smith 4 Innings 589 runs

i'll pay you $40k/year while i pay someone else 110-150k/year for doing less of a job then you. i'm sure you'll still be saying "not that disadvantaged"

Although I note he's only got the second highest average on the list...

DeGrandhomme 3 innings 182 runs highest score of 83 against sri lanka, then 76* and 23* against... Bangladesh at home.

mmmm....

At Headingley it took them 125 overs to chase 360, I think 80 overs to chase 350 is way too hard. Need to go at over 4 per over on a final day pitch. Plus it easy to bowl defensively in test cricket. The problem we had at Headingley was they had way too much time.

Agree it could help Warner, he needs to break the shackles.

Wow prissy

The CDG reference was a joke

On the other I was referring more to the only other two players that MIGHT be considered Smith’s peers, Kohli and Williamson... Several teams haven’t played much test cricket

Smith is best, daylight second... if Williamson and Kohli had 10+ innings Smith would be third and closing

I agree, it's just how I see Paine playing it though.
Hopefully we can setup the declaration in the evening, have 10 or so overs at them and one day to claim the rest of the wickets. That's what I'd like to see.

We get Bairstow or Stokes in particular I could see the rest of the wickets falling reasonably quickly.

Unless we roll them just after lunch Smithy's epic knock will be for absolutely f**k all and the poms would be confident of stealing the ashes in the last test if we blow two wins in a row. Desperately need a big first session tonight.

These late summer wickets suit us, they’re drier than normal and taking their seamers out of the game a bit. We’ve still got an excellent chance of winning at The Oval.

The weather is the only issue, and Ive read it wont be much of an issue last two days. The situation isnt as desperate as you say. Provided we bowl them out by tea, I reckon still very much in our favour.

Theyre 100 runs behind to avoid follow on, with only stokes, bairstow and butler left as recognised batsmen. A new ball is due in 6 overs. We’re moving into a day 4 wicket, with plenty of cloud cover next two days.

If they avoid follow on, we can build a lead of 300+ very quickly, in session and a half. That would still leave us 4.5 sessions all up to take 15 wickets. Thats 105 overs. If we cant do that on day 4/5 pitch we dont deserve to win.

Miracles happen once in a blue moon. Theyve just had theirs. We’ll win this comfortably.

Cummins bowling, so Starc to take the new ball.
Not sure that's the right call. Give the no. 1 bowler the new ball.
