I'm only guessing here, but maybe the board (who actually want Cleary) having spent a fortune getting rid of Hook, have given Gus a cap on what he can spend on a new coach, if it's not Cleary. Barrett would work for a fraction of the going rate, as would Ciraldo in order to get a foot in the door, so it might be between him and Ciraldo, unless the Cleary deal can be closed. Could be completely wrong of course.

I find it hard to believe that money would ever be the issue.

I think The Frog is talking about the Gould kiss of death. It gets denied, denied, denied and then it becomes true.

Moylan will see out his contract
Moylan will see out his contract
Moylan will see out his contract
Moylan released

Anthony Griffin will see out his contract
Anthony Griffin will see out his contract
Anthony Griffin will see out his contract
Griffin sacked.

No Trent Barrett is not coming to Penrith in 2019
No Trent Barrett is not coming to Penrith in 2019
No Trent Barrett is not coming to Penrith in 2019
????????????????????????

So on that note Bennett 's still a chance :p

If they think keeping Nathan requires Ivan money won't be an issue.

Doesn’t mean you don’t interview.

There’s also examples of recent success stories

Anthony Seibold
Maguire
Robinson
Paul Green

All within the last 6-7 years.

There are 19 first time coaches from the last ten years who got fired after their first job and never got another head coaching gig. That’s according to Kent anyway.

The odds say we are more likely to get a dud than a success story. Given we really are in a premiership window I’d rather bring in Cleary or let Ciraldo do it if those options are available.

Does that mean he's not coming? Gus has a weird system.
So does Bennett. When word was about to break he was going to the Roosters a decade ago he backed out.
He likes to keep the media guessing till the last moment on his future.
If we are interested he would want it nice and quiet.

While hypothsising gives us all something to discuss, does anyone really think Cleary for 2019 is not a done deal? I just can't see it playing out any other way.

What’s the harm with interviewing people though?

Even if you don’t find a head coach maybe you find an assistant. The club has total tunnel vision under Gould, it’s terrible management.

If Melbourne had this attitude they’d have passed on one of the greatest coaches ever.

Personally I don’t think there is any, but if they have two options in place that they like then what’s the point, Interviewing keeps the media writing stories and taking shots at the club, possibly distracting the team etc

Also just because they said they aren’t interviewing doesn’t mean they arent talking to people and about people. I think they are in a bit of a damage control mode right now.

I don't think it's a done deal, given that the Wests Tigers have to agree to it as well. However it is a deal that may or may not be done in the off season.

Because you don’t have a comparison point.
