Wow at that dogs crowd. Man there has been a lot of shit crowds recently. Surely the NRL must be talking about making some changes.

Sadly the nrl doesn’t care. It is getting its central funding regardless. Clubs are getting their $3mill extra a year with no strings attached so they don’t really care. It’s not until the knock on to tv viewing is effected that the nrl will care. They’ve been hanging their hat on new stadiums turning things around in Sydney, mainly because they don’t have to do or invest anything, but we all know that is only a small part of the equation. What we are seeing now is a culmination of years of neglect of game day experience and motivation to attend games. Maybe when we drop behind Aleague crowds Todd might take notice?

Can somebody please explain to me as a pommie the deal with the bulldogs??

Do they not own their own ground? Is the ANZ stadium miles away from Canterbury-Bankstown area?

Only Cronulla own their own ground, Belmore Oval, the Bulldogs traditional home ground is no longer up to NRL standard. The dogs are paid to by ANZ stadium to play at the ground.

Some real surprises (and not the good kind) this round. Honestly following Origin 2, Adelaide and Darwin, there was a great opportunity for both the Roosters & Eels to capitalise on the 'peak' interest in the sport in both markets in the 3 week build up to both their matches.

Whilst I can't comment on Adelaide, from being in Darwin around Origin 1, there was absolutely nothing letting people know about the upcoming match at TIO, which is crazy. Darwin likes its league, every bar in the town was showing Origin, there was plenty of people in league jerseys, etc, it so it should be an easier sell than say Adelaide to get a crowd.

I bet Adelaide was the same, which is a shame. Still don't want to be too hard on the Roosters v Storm crowd... it is still one of the top 10 largest crowds the NRL/NSWRL has drawn in the Adelaide market for a club match, second largest crowd for the round, and more than the Roosters would have drawn at the SCG for the game.

Tbf 16000 is more than the Roosters would of got at home

But that was one quiet crowd, it was good at times/after a try but majority of the time was fairly quiet, i think a chant only really started up once for each side

Not that it should need it but the stadium announcer etc. didnt really do much to try get the crowd going either, Im not sure how they usually do it in Sydney but a regular home game for the storm at AAMI seemed like more of an "event" than this game did

If the Roosters want to stick with this they need to make it feel like more of an event, walking up to the stadium there was a half fallen down membership gazebo (I think) and that was about it, didnt see any advertisment in the city either
Hindmarsh stadium is so much better
Hindmarsh stadium is so much better to watch Rugby league than adelaide oval. Fans are too far away at the oval. The atmosphere at Hindmarsh would be so good with a crowd of 16,000 as they are right close to the action.

Hindmarsh has a capacity of 15 or 16,000.

Whilst it would've looked good full, the issue is the shorter in goals, which I'm sure was an issue last time they played there in 2009.

SA govt spent a mint on the oval, they’re paying the roosters as they want content for that investment. Yes Hindmarsh is better for crowds around 15k but I guess the hope is for crowds closer to 20k. Also Coopers has very little cover so runnning risk of it being very wet weather effected at this time of year.

Sums up a lot of rugby league fans level of commitment to supporting their team. I keep hearing Sydney clubs have 200-300k “fans” Yet they can only get 10k on a good day to go to games. I dont get the point of nrl making so much money from tv if it isnt going to try and grow it’s fan engagement using some of it. Considering the nrl has doubled its revenue in space of a few years can you honestly say the game is any better or stronger for having all that money?

In my defence
I play soccer on Sundays
We don’t finish until approximately 3pm.
Getting to ANZ from here would be impossible and it’s a massive shithole.
It’s a stadium built for the Olympics not for a club game of footy.

No. But it will be better once the stadium is fixed up. Belmore is good for the odd game once a year. But really it's not a modern ground, and if your winning, can't hold the amount of fans that would turn up.
Dogs are a perfect example of winning equals crowds

Saints v Storm @ WIN stadium - 10,000

While Cronulla while winning can't average as many as the Dogs do at home. Even with the Dogs have 2 very poor crowds and a terrible team.
I wasn’t having a go at the dogs fans.
It’s just the way it is.
The team goes well the crowds come.
When the dogs were top 4 a few years ago the crowds were very good.

Just on yesterday.

I was offered Chairmans tickets by my mate who lived around the corner. Free food, free piss, great viewing. He was going to drive me in, park, drive me out etc.

I declined and when he left I did feel a pang of regret as he drove down the street. That lasted about 1 second when I started watching the game.

I would rather have a few beers and be with my kids around the fire and watch the game with friends than trek to that shithole at ANZ. I ain't commuting 2 hours on a Sunday for a game of footy- even if I dont have to pay or drive.

I had about 15 people in my yard for the game. Not one of them contemplated actually going to the stadium and when I suggested it they laughed at me.
