I gotcha but what I mean is certain pubs in Sydney wont even show NRL on the MAIN screen unless you actively harass them. Courthouse in Newtown, Surlys in Surry Hills etc etc. You don't have that problem in Cronulla, the AFL is always relegated to a shit screen and even then they will switch that over to NRL if you ask.

Oh my bad, I thought you were referring to the shire

Not knowing NZ very well I am always interested in the Warriors crowds and why they remain stubbornly low. How popular is RL in Auckland and is there any specific reasons why they dont regularly avg over 15k, form aside? Stadium looks reasonable and whilst inconsistent you never know if they will win or lose.

I'm at a loss to why Sydney refuses to back the game more given it is where it was born. Sure you can blame a raft of things but they are no different reasons as any major city, but other primary sports in a city Sydney's size achieve large crowds regardless.Only big point of difference is number of sides in Sydney compared to say soccer in major European cities.Maybe it is just too diluted to ever get over 20k to clubs regularly?

To where? Other than Perth where else shall we plonk somewhere else's team that it'll be embraced and supported to AT LEAST current levels? And just achieving current support levels is still a loss and very expensive and risky move just to replace 12k old fans with 12k new ones. You're guaranteed to lose current fans, you're not guaranteed to gain a thing.

They seem to just completely ignore this.

Titans have the same crowds as Sydney teams.
Cowboys have dropped heaps over the last 12 months.
They are almost on par
Canberras crowds were less than Cronulla last year.

But ey... its just the Sydney teams .

I think that is good examples though of why we should hope for more from our main base. But because of the population being so thinly spread its not delivering. In a city of 5million plus the main game in town shouldn't be struggling with a 12-14k crowd avg across its clubs. Sundays crowd was dead set embarrassing for two clubs from the same city.
Titans are just stubbornly unable to to get local people interested in them in any great number. If that is a reflection for the popularity of RL, the ineffectiveness of NRL to invest in growing its presence in the region or the Titans total failure to engage and connect with the local community I'm not positioned to say. The other two are small regional cities and Newcastle aside small regional cities are going to struggle to get 20k to games consistently.

Sydney should be our strength, not our weakness to be compared with small regional areas or AFL cities.

I’m not sure what they support in numbers in NZ apart from a bledisloe test.

I’ve watched numerous super rugby games between NZ teams, most recently the semi final, and the crowds always look awful. For their so called national sport, it is very poorly supported at the grounds.

Well
Canberra have more people there than Cronulla .
More members
A fancy stadium ( that you think is an absolute must)
But less crowds

Union is also a crap sport in the main. RL is the superior product but isn't given a fair go in NZ. Just look at the schooling set up and you will see rugby league has little presence. So you have a nation propagating one inferior code (RU)with a far superior code (RL) entrenched on the fringes/outside of establishment backing. There in lies the dilemna for rugby league. And not just in NZ!

Look at the crowds in Melb when the storm play warriors
It’s a significant bump compared to other teams.
Must be a big kiwi community there.

Probably part of the problem, can a 200k population sustain an NRL club and ever reach 20k crowds? If Canberra cant do it with 300k then how will Cronulla achieve it?

They seem to just completely ignore this.

C'mon mate it's simple. You just spend 10's of millions uprooting and relocating clubs to f**ken any old where, wave your magic wand and conjure up a large, loyal following. If that doesn't work I guess you throw another dart at the map, pump in more millions and try somewhere new.

There must be dozens of dormant RL loving cities around the country with adequate facilities and 15k wannabe NRL fans (who aren't currently supporting the game) chomping at the bit for a transplanted team.

There's probably 5 in reality; Perth, Brisbane North, Brisbane SW, Gosford, Adelaide. The last two being bigger gambles. Don't agree with relocation unless it works best for both parties, better to start a fresh without the taint of a failed brand imo.

Another reminder that this is not the expansion forum. Take discussions about where should have a team to the relevant forum and please leave this thread for discussion on crowds in 2019.

Give us more games on the Sunshine Coast we will sell out the ground every time.

11th biggest urban centre in the country, much bigger than other towns that get regular NRL football, rugby league heartland with our Queensland cup team 14-1 not sure why more teams don’t play here?

NQ have played like utter shit for 2 seasons in a row, and for some reason the NRL keep putting the better crowd drawing games up there in shitful timeslots and a heap of home games early in the season when it rains. I’m the first to admit our fans have gotten a little complacent of late but it’s also not entirely their fault.

Needs greater capacity. Having sell out 12k crowds isnt really helping the goal.
