Storm seems to have passed Canberra and nothing more coming at this stage.

Sydney on the other hand!

Fans love suburban grounds, apparently.
Arguably this of all games is suited to Kogarah, 20 minute train ride from Redfern to Carlton so easy enough for the Souths faithful to get there. Granted the Thursday timeslot will impact crowds but last night seems bizarrely low given both teams are showing form at the moment.

Game finished after 10. Get out of the ground wait for a train get on it. Probably get to Redfern around 11. Then still to get home..

Or you turn on the TV and watch it. Not even the incentive to see lower grades before NRL now.

The apathy of the Sydney sports fan right there

TV is where the money is. Clubs get their money whether members show up or not. It is up to NRL/Clubs to get people to actually show

TV money drives most sports. Regardless of whether they get their money or not, atmosphere and passion, observed in quality crowds, adds to the image and attraction of the game. Not to mention the extra kick that clubs get from people being at the game and boosting gate receipts. Just 2k more people each game for all home games nets almost an extra $m to the clubs revenues for a year. Surely that's enough motivation to change the attendance attitudes of Sydney teams if money is the key motivator for clubs?

You want attendance higher play every game on Sat night or Sunday... TV doesn't want that so you are stuck with some ordinary crowds as a result

The apathy of the Sydney sports fan right there

Thursday for 4-5 weeks at start of season, and then another 4-5 weeks at end of season is right way to approach it. Running it for the whole season last year has already generated fatigue.

As well as kick-off at 8:07pm. Schedule the match at 7:30pm and start it on time. Perhaps folks will be more likely to attend. But of course, it all needs to be done on 9s terms rather than ease of for the attending spectator. They want ACA at 7pm, and they will delay the game as long as possible after 8pm so as to broadcast the game as far as possible into prime time ratings period.

I reckon that extra 30-40 minutes is a killer. It felt late watching it on TV. And I didn't even have to leave the house.

It's as if people actually have other shit they need to get done outside of football.
So you're saying that watching live RL isn't appealing to most people to motivate working around 'other shit' to be done? Sounds like the NRL has really got a passionate following in Sydney. That attitude needs to be changed, with the help of the NRL and clubs especially, so that at the start of the week or every couple of weeks, going to a game of RL forms an initial part of planning the week ahead.

Do agree with an earlier poster that the number of Thursday games should be limited to the warmer/drier months of the season.

This. Finish games at 10.30pm with school/work the next day.. No matter where it is played will draw poorly

exctept Melbourne were one club drew 16k last week, or Newcastle who regularly draw 15k plus on a Thursday.
Yet two local clubs in the same time slot can only draw 10k? I thought suburban grounds were loved due to the proximity to their fan base making it easy to get to games?
Or maybe the fan apathy for some clubs just continues unabated? This is an Aleague standard crowd this early in the season, let’s not shy away from our failures.

Melbourne and Sydney's setup are totally different. Newcastle is regional. Look at the crowd Canberra will get tonight. Some timeslots are just bad

If majority dragons fans are not within easy reach of that ground why the heck are dragons playing there? how is melbournes set up different? Storm fans travel from across the city to get to ammi, is there not many Souths and dragons fans within a 30km radius of that game?

No arguments Thursday nights are sht and always going to impact crowds but come on, two of Sydney’s biggest clubs drawing 10k this early in the season??? It’s a poor outcome for the club and the game.

It isn't actually possible to move things all the time, especially when the NRL are inconsiderate enough to have it start after 8pm on a week night. People finish work late and start early. That's life.

Many families already have commitments on school nights. Homework, footy and netball training, sleep.

And whether you believe it or not- work, sport and education are probably more important than venturing out for a football game. Until we start paying people to turn up, the other things will take priority (as they should).

We should be grateful for those who turn up and those that watch on TV.

Storm are one team in a city of 4m people. A city that is better set out for moving around.

Souths who's fans live mostly West now and Dragons who's fans are split between Sydney and wollongong

If you were talking every other week you’d have a point, but once every few months? If you cared enough you’d be there, that’s the reality
