2019 Jerseys/Logos/Sponsorships

On seeing the Souths home jersey, I have to say that it's their best main design in years. Sponsor integration aside, the black is kept to a relative minimum which is the best we can hope for apparently.

A couple of simple changes that would improve it while still maintaining their black/white home/away look (which I detest):
  • Get rid of the black/white piping on the vertical sleeve stripe
  • Have the vertical sleeve stripe terminate at the first horizontal sleeve stripe it touches
This would better mimic the traditional striping at the top of the shoulder as if it were on a jersey with a normal sleeve instead of a raglan sleeve.

Yeh, the writing is there for the people who go "oh, what an interesting logo. i dont know what this represents. i wonder what i should google".

For everyone else, the writing is purely redundant...
Its poor design because they're obscuring a major function in a brand that's all about minimalism and function. If you're going to bother having text there (which throws the logo out of vertical alignment with most club logos), then you better make it readable.

And how is an uninitiated audience meant to know what to google if they can't read the text at all?

I had high hopes for the rebrand but the application on the jerseys has been too rigid. Whoever made the call on how the branding is applied to jerseys should have been able to come up with a better solution than clunky outlines on the icon and nothing at all on the wordmark.

The company that was given the contract to design the new logo are probably shaking their head in disbelief when they see their design being used like a patch/badge instead of it standing on its own. Personally... I love it as a badge.

when the writing is on a jersey, it's usually fairly evident already what it is.

Everywhere else it appears the text is usually readable or if the text is absent it's already in context and you know what you're looking at.

It's only on the retail versions it goes out as a patch, always has. On player issue jerseys it'll be sublimated, no?

I'm not talking about the physicality of the patch but the look of one. I'll use the Cronulla jersey as an example. I'm guessing that the original intention by the designers of this logo was to have the backdrop as the jersey itself and the new logo (no key line and not filled in the middle) in a contrasting colour, in this case black. This is the way that they seem to have gone with their media releases of the logo and the way it gets used in promotional material. I'm assuming from the photo below it will also take on this form when painted on the grass on match day. Somewhere along the line (maybe because they didn't anticipate some jerseys to have multi coloured designs on the chest) this logo has reset itself into past iterations and become a full blown badge. It's not obvious on some jerseys (eg Manly, Broncos, Raiders, Parra Home) because the fiill/keyline are in the same colour as the Jersey but for say Cronulla, Soutths, Parra away etc. It is very obvious. And it could have easily been avoided. Cronulla, Souths and Parra away are all jerseys that have plain chest colours and hence didn't need to have filled in coloured badges.

The version in use on the NRL's draw pages appears to have taken on a badge format rather than being inverted onto a dark background. I think it just depends.

The Oz is another News Corp rag, I'd take what it says with a grain of salt. They're probably basing that line of the whisper from whatever post was previously made in here.

If sponsors are worrying so much I doubt they would be expanding partnerships: https://www.nrl.com/news/2019/02/21/chemist-warehouse-extends-nrl-partnership-in-2019/
Brent Read is one of the better league journos, he doesn’t strike me as someone who makes things up. The whisper has been around since before the debelin stuff.

I can't find it on the draw page. The official website likes to use the fluro green logo mostly. When the premiership badge does feature it looks like this

The official PDF version of the draw has the logo in white with black background. I'm not saying you're wrong but I just couldn't find the draw you are talking about

I dunno if this means much, but the trademark for the Telstra badged logo was requested to be withdrawn by the NRL in January.
