Teams playing in trials and again in Round 1 isn't a new concept tbh - fairly sure the Dogs and Storm have done it recently.
Never said they are uncommon just said Gus specifically changed last yr trial for this EXACT REASON.

You can say "we" all you like but if you're going to get strong 15k+ crowds to this timeslot, it would indicate the fans don't hate it, at least not in the same numbers as other areas.
Actually, Timtam, all it indicates is that the fans love the team, whatever the timeslot. You can bet your fat arse that we would get more on a Sunday arvo than Friday at 6pm

Roosters/souths, penrith/parra and to a lesser extent storm/broncos are wasted in round 1. They would draw just as well in round 4 or 5.

I agree with Roosters/Souths & Penrith/Parra being wasted...

But playing Storm/Broncos in Melbourne in Round 1 is a massive opportunity for the Storm to get a bigger crowd. Especially being before the AFL starts later. If Storm can get back to back home games in Round 1 & 2, with Round 2 being a Saturday twilight/night game the crowd numbers will be up as dual-code supporters will attend NRL games before the AFL season starts.

If you can remind dual-code supporters how enjoyable Storm home games are to attend this increased attendance will flow through to the rest of the season.

I would be interested if anyone had a ratings comparison between the 6pm Friday game and the 2pm (or 6:30pm) Sunday game. It seems like a no-brainer that the NRL should schedule more Sunday football, so I'd imagine ratings would have to be a crucial factor.

What a stupid argument. We draw 20k + on sundays. Knights fans show up regardless doesn’t mean they should be taken for granted.

Sadly they have rated pretty well. I’d hoped they would be terrible but they are fox’s second best exclusive rating game after the saturday nght game. Would be interested to see how a exclusive Sunday 6pm rated. Splendid Sunday with a 2pm, 4pm and 6pm ko would be great.

Totally agree with this. It’s stupid having big local derbies in round 1. In round 1 I’m that excited the footys back I don’t care who’s playing who. It’s better to hold them back so that there will be big blockbuster clashes throughout the year.

I'm not making a mutually exclusive argument - I'm simply pointing out that of all the clubs who have hosted Friday 6pm games that Newcastle have offered the best support in terms of crowd numbers - hence why it stands to reason the NRL will favour them in that timeslot when scheduling.

As I've already said, I hope there are some better timeslots in the draw for the Knights too, because with an upswing in form, there could be some great Sunday arvo crowds there.

The R1 draw is better than most years but again, why are games being played in NQ so early in the year?
Titans always seem to be a R1 after thought, getting 1pm or 6pm KO’s on Sunday at home. March is still stifling in Qld.
Newcastle, screwed again by the draw.

All in all, not a bad opening round

Playing in QLD before DST ends is probably more of a TV thing then anything else

For what it's worth I'm led to believe the games on Saturday aren't as the Tele has reported, and they're actually in the normal AEDT slots of 3pm (Warriors, 5pm local) 5:30pm (WT v Manly) and 7:30pm (Cowboys, 6:30pm local)
