AFL had massive fta ratings last night. Over 830000 including regionals. I suspect the Melbourne audience was huge as it was a game between two Melbourne suburbs. Food for thought next year for the NRL. Today will be interesting as we got a bit of a hiding last year for the afternoon match compared with them. We left it solely on fox for far too long. Reactive administration I’m afraid.
It's worth noting the 836k is the lowest for the fixture which is now in its third year from memory.

Last year it got 892k, the year before 958k.

I am pretty sure this is not the first year the AFL have done the night before ANZAC day game.
The NRL should have had a game on last night. Souths v Panthers at Bankwest for the first night game there would have got 30k.

Didn’t know that. Thanks mate.
My gut feel living in Melbourne is that people are a little bit over the ANZAC Eve fixture - its crowd has declined as well since 2017, 85k down to 77k then last night 72k.

Still obviously strong attendance but that's some serious waning interest.

Worth noting that the previous two years figures include Fox, and were broadcast on FTA on 7mate nationally. The 836k this year is Channel 7 only so far - was national on the main channel.

  • 836k in 2019 - No Fox inc. (Metro 611, Reg 225k)
  • 892k in 2018 - Fox included. (Metro 464k, Reg 130k, Fox 298k)
  • 958k in 2017 - Fox included. (Metro 480k, Reg 165k, Fox 313k)

it does beg the question on FTA coverage though ... i turned on the tv in sydney last night and wondered what a suburban melbourne clash was doing on ch7 ... in light of storm FTA coverage in melbourne, it's pretty infuriating...

I imagine it was due to there be no opposition broadcast (i.e. NRL at the same time) so 7 thought they might pick up good ratings from it.

This afternoon's AFL has been pushed to 7mate in Sydney.

I reckon being on the main channel is the reason the ratings are so strong this year. The 5 city breakdown is interesting this year vs last - Adelaide with a reasonable jump, moreso than Perth.

2019 - 7 nationally
5CM 611K
- MEL 376K
- ADL 95K
- PER 64K
- SYD 40K
- BNE 40K

2018 - 7mate nationally
5CM 464K
- MEL 281K
- PER 73K
- ADL 59K
- SYD 26K
- BNE 25K

Apparently this time of the year is officially a non ratings period due to the number of holidays and such. Ratings are still collated, but they dont really mean anything to the networks - officially.

Only the SYD-BNE totals in for yesterday so far... 310K for Melb-NZ, 298K for the Syd-Saints game.

Will be interesting to see the total including regionals - Ch 7 have released their figures which sit at 1.044 mil incl regionals for the Essendon-Collingwood match (779k metro)

The difference between the ratings jump for Adelaide and Perth is due to the broadcast in Perth actually being on 7Mate. Sports broadcast on primary channels in the East often get shunted to secondary channels in WA, because of the timezone difference I think.

Shows the inexplicable power of primary channels.
