2019 team line up

The opposition know Lafai is slow and so anticipate the pass to his winger. With a good young speedy centre, the opposition would be in two minds; just like they should be.

Well Lafai breaks pretty close to the same amount of tackles as Aitken per game, had the same number of line breaks and actually runs for more metres per carry ... On top of that can actually offload inside and out, set up his winger and has less try causes/line break casuses.

The only area that Aitken is obviously superior is the handling errors which is a function of the attempted offloads.

Thats a record breaking side right there, as in it would be the slowest backline in NRL history.

I think you will find our 77 GF back line would have been slower.
Goodwin
Butler
Finch
Quinn
Chapman
Mc Gregor
Bailey
Truly amazing what a good coach can do with a plodder backline behind a dominant and intimidating forward pack.

Gee Crush, sometimes I wonder …….

So our game manager at fullback
Select our best right centre on the left wing
Leave our potentially best left winger out of the 17
Retain Aitken at right centre - our weak-link in defence and attack
Select Pereira at right wing - he will never see the ball with Aitken inside him.
Widdop's weakest skills are game management and closing out a close game, so no change there.
JDB is likely to be stood down on full pay until court action is completed.
And to top it all off, you have Latimore on the bench.

I suppose the only change that I completely agree with is Robson at 14.

Possm, I said that was the team that I think Mary will go with.
If you go to the official Dragons website, the most recent article they have posted is nrl.com likely starting 17.
Its essentially the team that I have posted except they have Widdop at fullback instead of Norman.
I think Mary will move Norman to fullback.
Thanks

Pearson will and should get a wing spot. He's a gun. Mika might surprise people too. Pleeeenty of potential there.

If Widdop is to be selected at fullback than we need to make up for the loss of Dufty's speed.

St George Illawarra Dragons: 2019 Round 1 predicted team

Coach Paul McGregor needs to sort out why the Red V are so good at starting seasons and so poor at finishing them; if he can unlock that mystery the premiership window is open for the Dragons.

The arrival of ex-Eels playmaker Corey Norman provides a huge boost to the club with both he and Gareth Widdop able to play fullback, halfback or five-eighth. His signature will be even more useful given the loss of Kurt Mann to Newcastle.

Korbin Sims provides a like-for-like bench replacement for Leeson Ah Mau. Nene Macdonald (Cowboys) and Jason Nightingale (retired) leave wing spots open with young gun Zac Lomax a good chance of starting on the flank in 2019 after some impressive games at centre late in 2018.

Resident NRL.com expert Jamie Soward says:

"If Corey Norman comes then he goes straight into the six role with Widdop to fullback and Dufty misses out.

"You've got depth on the bench, I would have Korbin Sims starting and James Graham coming off the bench. Last season once his form went out he got a bit tired. He's a competitor and if you start him on the bench you have someone to come on in that second 20 minutes and keeps the intensity up and maintains the rage.

"I want Lomax in the centres with Tim Lafai, Ravalawa and Pereira on the wings and Aitken misses out."

NRL.com's predicted Round 1 team:

  1. Gareth Widdop
  2. Zac Lomax
  3. Euan Aitken
  4. Tim Lafai
  5. Jordan Pereira
  6. Corey Norman
  7. Ben Hunt
  8. Paul Vaughan
  9. Cameron McInnes
  10. James Graham
  11. Tyson Frizell
  12. Tariq Sims
  13. Jack De Belin
  14. Blake Lawrie
  15. Jacob Host
  16. Luciano Leilua
  17. Korbin Sims
Other squad members: Mitch Allgood, Jai Field, Josh Kerr, Jeremy Latimore, Darren Nicholls, Jonus Pearson, Mikaela Ravalawa, Reece Robson, Tristan Sailor, Lachlan Timm

A lot of these reporters and commentators hate us and think Mary is dumb enough to be influenced by the team they want him to pick. The only one I take seriously is Gaz. Pereira tries really hard. If only we could put him in McDonalds body. Alas, he is small and slow for a winger. Should only be considered as a back up.

Well, I'm not there for the off-season training sessions and I imagine that the coaching staff would be tracking squad members progress and fitness.

At the same time I'm sure Mary would not want to show his hand just yet and some of these predicted selections are the old cloak and dagger trick. I'd like to see:
1. Widdop
2. Pearson
3. Lomax
4. Lafai
5.
Ravalaw
6. Norman
7. Hunt
8. Graham
9. McInnes
10. Vaughan
11. Leilua
12. T Sims
13. Frizell - I feel JDB will be out
14. Robson
15. K Sims
16. Kerr
17. Lawrie
