If I know Mary, he will go his usual route of pick and stick.
He has to fit Norman in somewhere.
I can see Field getting shafted and Norman playing more hours off the bench in 2 games than Field got for 2018.

the centres really piss me off. Laughai plodded in the trial and plod he will until hes dropped, useless, we need a KEEN kid there, enter LOMAX!

Aitken is cancer to our team, he should go aswell, anyone is better and we just bought Norman so Id whack him in there cant be as bad as Aitken

for round 1

Dufty
Ravalawa
Lomax
Norman
Periera (gets the job done but Pearson might overcome him if given a go I think hes got star quality and have heard this from my buddy an insider at the Broncos, true dinks)
Widdop
Hunt

Vaughn
Mcinnes
Graham
Tariq
Frizz
Korbin

Robson ( for hooker and lock)
Lawrie/Host/Timms/Kerr
Luch
Field ( supersub he CARVED in the trial and hell CARVE all year if given some quality first grade time)

I see it a little different. I'd say that Mary will need to fit in Widdop somewhere. Make take is that Norman as been signed as our long term 6 and Widdop is here for 2019 only.

If Mary wishes to play Dufty at fullback, he will need to find a spot for Widdop somwher in the 17. Variables will be Widdop's current fitness/injury situation and Dufty's progress in the off-season with regards to defence, confidence under the high ball, preparedness to carry the ball out of his own 20 and general positioning on the field.

I'm afraid Mary has too many options and it may turn into a shambles.
If any coach needs to follow the KISS principle, it's him.
Starting another new halves pairing. I know they have played together, but a while ago now.
I just believe our best chance on a 2019 premiership is with last years halves.
Ease Norman into the side.

With all players fit and available excluding JDB, this would be the side I would be looking at playing

1 Dufty
2 Ravalawa
3 Lomax
4 Widdop
5 Pearson/Saab/Pereira
6 Hunt
7 Norman
13 Frizell
12 Leilua
11 T Sims
10 Graham
9 McInnes
8 Vaughan

14 Robson
15 Lawrie
16 K Sims
17 Timm/Kasiano

I would play McInnes for the first 50 minutes and bring Robson on for the last 30 minutes. I would want to gauge who is the one to keep out of Robson or McInnes. I prefer an 80 minute hooker.

Lawrie, Sims and Timm would all replace Frizell, Vaughan and Graham before halftime and would all be replaced 10 to 15 minutes after halftime. That would leave me with one replacement up my sleeve.

I just read a headline from the SMH, saying that Kasiano is firming to be JDB's replacement. If he is then he would be fast tracked into the team ahead of Timm. I liked the intent that Timm showed against Newcastle. I would like to see the same intent from Kasiano. I actually like the idea of signing Kasiano. I always thought our roster was short one good prop. I would even consider starting with Kasiano instead of Graham. I have had a high opinion of Kasiano for a long time, but he hasn't lived up to his potential as yet. He should be motivated to secure a first grade spot. It will be interesting to see if Mary can take Kasiano's game to a new level?

I would have Widdop at centre, because that is where I think he fits into our best 13.

I am open to throwing Saab into the deep end and seeing if he can swim, so to speak. He is only 18, but if he is good enough he is old enough and I have seen many 18 year old backs come into first grade and play well over the years. I want to see some of Pearson, but we won't be seeing anything of him until the season starts.

I really like the look of the team I picked. The backs have a lot more speed and flare than we had last year and what I expect Mary to pick. Our forward pack, including the bench is big and tough and would be one of the best in the comp. I think Norman is one of the best playmakers in the game and he should thrive playing behind our strong pack. We also have good depth, with Timm, Host, Ford, Kerr, Latimore, Field, Lafai and Aitken. I would have the above team as second pick to win the comp behind Easts.

I was thinking about Frizzell at lock and the more I thought about it the better it sounded. He runs like a middle rather an edge player and at lock he can play both sides of the ruck. Imagine Frizell running at the opposition and Tariq outside him.

The defence would be hard pressed to contain both of them, the more I thought about it the more I thought that Tyson could even displace Taumololo as the best lock. Similar size, faster and probably has better footwork.

Tariq was dangerous last year but imagine if he has Tyson running as a decoy inside of him. When the defence starts to read Tariq getting the ball, give it short to Tyson.

I have been saying for years that lock is Frizell's best position. He excelled when playing lock for NSW and was one of the best on the ground. He likes to run straight and hard, he has a high work rate and playing lock he doesn't have to wait for the game to come to him. I also said that he could be the second best lock in the game, behind Taumalolo. Taumalolo is listed as playing secondrow for Nth Qld this week, with Maguire at lock.

Well we at least know that according to the coach one bench spot will be either Luc or Host with one of them starting.
One will be KS when he comes back so the plot thickens as to who gets the last 2.

Exactly OT.
But I think it was obvious (at least to me) that Friz will play lock regardless of KS when he comes into the side. So, I expect both Leilua and Host to be in the 17 from round 1, with most probably Leilua to start and Host on the bench. I think Hosty offers more value as both an edge and can play in the middle for short periods if needed where Leilua cannot.

I think the more interesting question is who fills the bench prop with Lawrie, the choice is between Latimore, Kerr and as a roughie Timm (whilst KS is out). Personally, I'd go for Kerr, it gives him a taste for a couple of games and make him earn his spot permanently. We all know what Latimore has to offer already.

The problem is and I luv Frizz as one of my favourites in the team as he only loves to run straight within the middle not playing on an edge so wasted at 13 for me.
Lock is not the same these days, especially Mary's lock who will stay smack back running and defending in the middle. Even at times supposedly being a ball distributor which Frizz is not.
I applaud Taumalolo going to an edge position because he will be even more damaging. Imagine all those years if he was on the left edge of JT instead of Cooper.
Frizz should stay on the edge and be told dont run back to the middle all the time, once in a blue moon OK. KSims will do me as lock under Mary. Mary's forwards game plan is extremely simple but affective only because of the talent we have.
Different coach...well different game plan..maybe Frizz with a roving commission between middle and edges is a good 13. He will be wasted there in our team

Pretty sure McGregor has already hinted that Dufty will get a bench spot.
Absolute madness BTW.

I couldn't agree more. Another unnecessary and disruptive positional move that weakens an already vulnerable right side defence without really improving anything in the middle. Frizell will be completely rooted by about round 15 if he plays lock. We have plenty of other options for lock and I believe some cash now to buy in someone like Kasiano who can go to prop and allow Vaughan to play lock. A Vaughan and Lawrie lock rotation would work well or even Timm who is already looking the goods. Latimore and K. Sims if necessary but not Frizzel what a effing waste that would be, one of the great backrowers of our game, FMD. I want him out wide smashing opposition halves, centres and back rowers, that's his value to us and some devastating bursts ( against smaller men ) to get us rolling and open things up, not a mindless workhorse in the middle.

Yes all you need to do with Frizz is instruct the halves or a centre who can pass back inside to engage the line and put him into holes as he runs off their shoulder. It is not that hard but we dont do that no where near often enough but happy to try it with Tariq.
Why cannot the Dragons perform sweeping or deep back line moves going from left to right I wonder and look so clunky doing it. That is Frizz's side and it eats me up seeing the same right to left attack only. Our right side gets predominantly used for hit ups only.

De Belin does distribute the ball, does run up the middle as well as on either edge and is very good in defence - especially lateral defence.

If Frizell is moved to the middle and asked to defend in the middle and run straight up the middle he will do a great job. Maybe he can even learn to give the occasional offload. I'd day Frizell is part of the right edge defensive problem; along with Hunt and Aitken.

By switching Frizell to the lock position and Leilua/Host as the edge forward option, SGI's prop rotation will look much healthier with Vaughan, Graham, K Sims and a young forward in the prop rotation each week. This means the likes of Lawrie, Kerr and Timm would be available in turn for selecton in the 4th prop position.

Under the above prop rotation the young props would be given the opportunity to gain first grade minutes and hopefully improve enough to cover a prop position if/when injury or fatigue occurs.

Show or tell me game when DeBelin is defending and playing on an edge. But disagree take Frizzell out of the edge and we lose impact and more try scoring opportunities. Just needs to work more plays into utilising better into holes. It isnt that hard. Just replace Debelin with another middle forward..problem solved.

I'd prefer K Sims at lock however, I'm sure Mary recently said it would be Frizell. I do agree with you and just wish Frizell would run similar lines to T Sims in attack and work better with Hunt in defence on the right edge.
