The 6pm time slot seems like something that would have come up during negotiations as a bluff and then everyone just forgot about it because it was such a bad idea - and that's how it got through.

The NRL is finally standing up to television network Channel 9 over the season schedule. No longer will the showpiece match of the round be shown on prime-time Thursday nights.

When the NRL draw is released tomorrow, it will be the most family-friendly schedule we’ve had since the networks took control of the timeslots.

This year the emphasis is on getting fans back to the football rather than just TV ratings that have been average anyway.

Last season crowds were down slightly and there has been little or no growth in the past 10 years. Something needs to be done about it.

The answer is to make the schedule more appealing for families. Like all businesses, you open your doors at the most suitable times for your customers.

You will find the better games next year will be on Saturday afternoons/evenings or Sunday afternoons.

Under the old system, they would have been on a Thursday night.

No more blockbusters on school nights when it’s too late to watch on TV, let alone get to a game and fight the traffic or transport hassles on the way home.

There are a couple of good examples in the round one draw, revealed in The Sunday Telegraph. Arch rivals Manly and Melbourne on a Sunday afternoon will be as good as it gets.

The game-day experience will be so much more appealing than a Thursday night.

Suddenly it becomes a hot-ticket affair and will sell out.

Other examples are the grand final rematches between the Roosters and Raiders. One is a Saturday game, the other a Sunday afternoon match.

Melbourne Storm hosting the Broncos will be on a Saturday night this year.

Normally the Sydney Roosters v South Sydney Rabbitohs grudge match would be played on a Thursday night for the ratings. This year they play in round three and it will be on a Friday night.

The biggest complaints we get from fans every season are about the timing of matches and the fact Channel 9 runs the schedule, not the NRL. Daytime football is what they love … plus a fair go with ticket and food prices.

This is a much fairer system for all 16 clubs. Teams like the Raiders, who have had little or no prime-time exposure for their sponsors, will get more Channel 9 matches.

Financial figures leaked over the weekend show the Broncos make an $11.5 million profit from their sponsors. That’s because they always get the eyeballs on prime time.

This is compared to a club like the Sea Eagles, who made only $3.1 million from their commercial partners.

It’s so much easier to get corporate support when you can show potential sponsors that the size of your audience is bigger than other franchises, like the Broncos do.

Sharing the prime-time spots around the clubs also helps player welfare by cutting the number of five-day turnarounds. The draw will show that tomorrow. It’s a win for the fans and the players.

If this is true, then it could potentially increase the value of the other games for the next deal. About time, this is a good decision.

If this is true then we’ll done to the NRL admin. It’s taken far too long to get here.

The article also makes me think the 2023 TV deal will have an emphasis on Saturday and Sunday games over Thursday night and Friday at 6pm.

Hopefully the KO timed at nights can be reigned in a little and 7:50pm means just that

Typical, Broncos, Roosters 0 and channel 9’s other favourites once or twice which is probably in NZ or against the Knights
Roosters one of the top 2 or 3 highest rating teams on FTA from memory, definitely in the top 5. We had 2 the year before, but when you're the premiers and rate well a few things scheduling wise will always go your way

Will believe it when I see it. Giving a Grand Finalist a 1st round game against last years spooners in the worst timeslot isn't a great start.

Eels confirm Broncos 2020 match in Darwin on Anzac Day eve

Mon 28 Oct 2019, 08:00 AM

The Parramatta Eels Club is excited to announce that we are returning to the Northern Territory on Anzac Day eve for a clash against Brisbane Broncos in Round 7 at TIO Stadium.

In what is expected to be the biggest rugby league match to ever be played in Darwin, featuring two of the NRL’s major Clubs, the game will be broadcast live nationally on Channel 9’s Friday night Football.

Anzac Day holds special significance for Darwin which was bombed in 1942 in the largest ever foreign attack on mainland Australia. The Parramatta Eels Club will continue to honour the rugby league tradition of celebrating Anzac Day with a special ceremony at the game.

The following morning, Eels officials and up to 6000 people are expected at the Darwin Dawn Service at the cenotaph on cliffs overlooking Darwin Harbour and the Timor Sea.

Parramatta Eels Club acting CEO Jim Sarantinos said, “the significance of Anzac Day is important to our Club and we are privileged to commemorate the occasion in Darwin.

“We’re really looking forward to this clash with the Broncos, at our second home. We have an incredibly loyal fan base in the NT, and we hope to see many of our Members and supporters make the trip from interstate to cheer us on.”

Northern Territory Minister for Tourism, Sport and Culture Lauren Moss said, “we are thrilled to be able to host the Parramatta Eels and the Brisbane Broncos as part of the ANZAC Day Round in Darwin next year.

“Sport is a way of life for Territorians, and we look forward to bringing this game to Darwin, which is expected to be the most significant rugby league match ever to be played in the Northern Territory.”

In the lead-up to the fixture, the Eels will host a number of activities and events for the local community to showcase rugby league and provide an opportunity to engage with the team.

The Parramatta Eels players will make their annual pilgrimage to Alice Springs in November this year to visit local schools, host rugby league coaching clinics and engage with the community.

The Eels have unveiled details of a special Membership package for local NT Eels fans. Membership options include exclusive Membership benefits as well as reserved tickets to the match at TIO Stadium for the Anzac Day eve blockbuster.

Further details about the 2020 Parramatta Eels Membership package for NT can be found here.

Even with a shiney new stadium, still spreading the word. Respect Eels.

The NRL has set up a number of early season grudge matches to kick-off 2020 with Wayne Bennett’s rivalry with Anthony Seibold to resume in round two on a Friday night at Suncorp Stadium.

Fox Sports has obtained 10 of the NRL’s blockbuster games for next season with the NRL is currently telephoning all clubs to inform them of their home game matches.

The Broncos will host the Rabbitohs in round two on March 20 while back-to-back premiers the Sydney Roosters will then host their arch-rivals South Sydney in round 3 at the SCG on Friday March 27.

In round four, Ivan Cleary’s Penrith Panthers will host Seibold’s Brisbane Broncos at Panthers Stadium on Saturday April 4 at 7.30pm.

Round five will see the traditional Easter Good Friday game between the Rabbitohs and Bulldogs at ANZ Stadium on April 10 with a 4pm kick-off.

In round 6 the latest chapter in the recent rivalry between the Wests Tigers and Panthers will unfold when Penrith host Michael Maguire’s side at the foot of the mountains on a Sunday afternoon at 4pm.

The Magic Round in Brisbane will kick off in round 8 with the first match to see Wests Tigers hosting the Cronulla Sharks at Suncorp Stadium at 6pm.

The next Magic Round fixture will pit the Manly Sea Eagles up against the Brisbane Broncos at 8pm on Friday May 1.

Another new grudge match will open round 10 when premiers the Sydney Roosters host the Newcastle Knights at the SCG on Thursday night May 14 at 8pm.

The Roosters were fuming at the Knights in August when the Novocastrians poached young gun assistant coach Adam O’Brien to replace Nathan Brown as Knights head coach.

There are also a host of ex-Roosters players now at the Knights headlined by Mitchell Pearce, Aiden Guerra and Connor Watson.

In round 13 the Queen’s Birthday Monday long weekend will see the traditional Bulldogs vs. Dragons match at ANZ Stadium with a 4pm kick-off.

The final game of the regular NRL season in round 25 next year will be the western Sydney derby when the Penrith Panthers host the Parramatta Eels.

If the Panthers and the Eels are both in finals contention, the full house sign will be going up for sure.

The Panthers will host the Eels on Sunday September 6 at 4pm at Panthers Stadium.
