Not sure the FG is that big a deal. It's just annoying because I think it is fiddly, overly complex & a dumb gimmick.

But the only time to take it is within 2 mins of halftime in a very small section of the field, or if behind by 1pt in a very small section of the field.

The rest of the time you're likely giving away 7 tackles 20m restart assuming it rolls out the in goal somewhere.

If I were souths I would have Latrell practicing field goals all off season, he has a legitimate bomb of a boot and is one player I can see nailing a few.
I've never understood why players and teams don't practice for a lot more. It gives you such an advantage in close games over the other 15 teams that don't take it seriously.

With 2 points on offer each set it would almost warrant a specialist.
If you had a player who was reserve grade level at everything else but a brilliant field goal kicker do you play him?

If your kick returns and go forward is so bad you end every set 40m+ out you try anyone I guess.

Just watched the 84 semi between souths and Manly.

What a cracking game.

5m defence and back line moves with the back line going back 20m.

I'm not convinced the game is better.

There's a few old Raiders games on youtube from the late 80s/1990 and they are good to watch. The ball movement, offloading and support play are more important facets of the game back then. Great skills. Players expected to play footy & tucked it under the arm as a last resort. Then again having more than 2 in the tackle was rare so the offload after contact was easier found. Players are fit enough to get 3 & 4 men in every time now.

There are probably absolute bludgers of games that finish 6-2 with 37 minutes of play being scrums resetting, penalties off scrums, rakebacks in the ruck gone wrong and a soapy old leather ball that weighed 2.5kg wet getting dropped everywhere (have at it boys!)

Interested to see how these play out. Not a fan of the 2 point drop goal and would have liked to have seen a reduction in interchanges however we are definitely heading towards a game where fitness is going to be the deciding factor, and those big players who can't play a substantial part of the game will become obsolete. This will also have the effect of less dangerous big hits and less concussions which is the flavour of the week currently for RU stories in the UK.

I don't think teams see a 7 tackle set as the same punishment anymore. Hence why holding down early in a set is so common.

The first bloke I thought of when this rule came in! Latrell can kick them 50m+

Any rule change that encourages more kicking should be put straight into a TBoon thread. I understand the premise of the rule change, but FMD watching field goal attempts will be cringe.

If the points go up for a goal, then the points need to go up for a try. A try should always be what teams are aiming for in a set. If a team has a good enough kicker, they could just take 5 hitups, kick a long range field goal and get the ball back ad nauseum.

Do we really want to see that?

This

If anything points should be worth less for kicks. Obviously in the case of field goals that is impossible but I have always felt a conversion being worth half a try is too much especially in the era of 80% plus conversion rates. Being worth 25% of a try sounds more reasonable to me.

Penalty goals would probably have to stay at 2 as an incentive to not breach the rules.

we might even progress to the point where a special team is allowed to come on the field to specifically kick that Field goal, maybe a couple blockers too?

I’d personally like a rule that a try off a kick you don’t get the conversion. Find kick tries fairly meh. I know many won’t agree.

Mary got another alt?

Nope it's just me. As I said I expect other to not like it. Just find these kick tries a lot less exciting than tries through the hands. That is a personal opinion, and I know others may not agree.
