Hi Callmack appreciate you posting all the latest articles but none of it has anything to do with signings etc
May I suggest you open a new thread called Callmacks latest news as it’s simply clogging up this thread cheers mate
Hi mate, appreciate the thought but this is a news and rumours thread and that's the way it has been for years. I see it as a 'one stop shop' with rumours and news all in the one place.

If most people really want me to make a change, I will because I'm open to suggestions but personally, I think it's fine as is.

I'm a big fan of the idea of the crackdown but the timing of it is questionable. It's a big ask to make wholesale changes to tackling techniques mid-season.

It also makes no sense to stop a game to put players on report when every game is reviewed anyway. And this applies to all reportable offences.

It's a stance that the league needs to take, otherwise it faces the potential for law suits in the future. There is too much information about the long term effects of head injuries.

What chance more players will be ducking into tackles in the hope of getting an opposition player binned for a high hit?

Fine them and potentially even ban them if they do. These rules are being implemented by the NRL, their employer to protect their welfare and as employees it is their responsibility to follow those rules, not manipulate them.

The NRL isn't alone in this current situation. The AFL and RU have been going through similar changes as well as NFL, NHL and other contact sports around the world.

The pierra tackle on tadesko i thought was exactly that, tadesko runs in a sort of crouching style and even the parra incident i thought he fell into the tackle, this happens alot and at speed its very difficult to compensate after youve commited to the tackle,i really believe the 5 min bin should be used for incidents like the sua tackle were there was no dicomfort or injury

But how do you know which incidents are deliberate and which are not?

The high tackle, above the shoulders including neck and head area rule change should have been introduced years ago.
Two things, first thing, we are already seeing players claiming high shots by putting their hands on the back of their head/neck region or their jaw/facial area, and getting immediate benefit of a penalty. One of the Morris twins did this two weeks ago, once the penalty was awarded, play recommenced and the same Morris barged through two players and carried the fullback over the line to score, within sixty seconds. Extremely difficult area to police but if we are to avoid the European football/ (soccer) example some sort of punishment for acting out an injury is a must otherwise it becomes farcical.
Second thing. The infringement penalty and punishment must be as immediate as possible because if it player is suspended after the judiciary meeting mid week then the team that was infringed against doesn't get the recompense so we now have these stoppages that may go back to an incident that may be two or three tackles previous.

Increasing the severity of each penalty and making sure that each and every player cops the same penalty may reduce each incident - it has in rugby union.
An example would be that Wareea Hardgraves (?) finally receiving an adequate punishment for his foul play.

The Cronulla supporters like Ennis and Rothfield are accusing us and Cody of doing exactly what you stated in your first point. I heard them whinging on sun and mon night on Fox

From Sporting News,

'Different ballgame': Damien Cook hopeful of Origin leniency in foul play crackdown

South Sydney's Damien Cook and Jai Arrow have backed the NRL's snap crackdown over foul play and are confident players will learn to adjust in the wake of a wild Magic Round.

Yet the State of Origin stars, who are virtually certain to feature for New South Wales and Queensland respectively, are hopeful leniency over the ruling will be shown in the upcoming interstate showdown.

Referees have typically put their whistles away during the often fast and intense Origin battles, showing leniency towards incidents of foul play such as high shots that would otherwise be punished in a regular NRL match. As a result, two of the past three series openers have seen just five penalties awarded.

However, NRL head of football Graham Annesley told the Sydney Morning Herald Origin officials will be directed to uphold the hardline stance towards foul play enforced last weekend up in Brisbane.

It comes after the Match Review Committee handed down a record 24 charges relating to the weekend's Magic Round action, which was littered with sin-bins and send-offs for players making accidental contact with the head in a tackle.

Cook said he fully supported the idea of eradicating high contact from the game and said the NRL was going down the right path with its controversial crackdown.

But the incumbent Blues hooker still believes whistleblowers may show more tolerance in June's series opener in Melbourne.

"It's a different ballgame, Origin," Cook said.

"We've seen rule changes run in the (NRL) but once you get to Origin (it's different).

"It's a great spectacle, it's always good entertainment when you let a few niggling things go.

"I'm probably contradicting myself, but everyone loves Origin."

Arrow, who will be named in Paul Green's Queensland squad, was also hopeful the Origin referees refrain from pulling up minor head contact.

"They are obviously much more lenient in an Origin game and rightly so I suppose," the Rabbitohs lock said. "It's the pinnacle of rugby league and the fans love it so I think the refs are a bit mindful of that and want to make the game flow as much as they can.

"If there's going to be blatant swinging arms to the head then I'm all for (the referees) blowing a penalty or sending them to the bin if it's that bad.

"I definitely think they'll be more lenient in an Origin game."

Pioneers of the change NRL boss Andrew Abdo and ARL Commission Chairman Peter V'landys have been forced to vehemently defend the sudden heavier scrutiny on foul play.

Numerous players - both current and former - came out lamenting the mass sin-binnings which resulted in a number of blow-out scorelines across the weekend.

But Cook is confident players will quickly adapt to the new measures as they have in the past with previous amendments to rules.

"I understand what the game's trying to do and I support them with trying to look after player welfare too," the Rabbitohs No. 9 said.

"We've got to give the refs times and we've got to give the game time for them to learn that.

"It's going to take a couple of weeks to get the right balance between when there's a send-off, or 10 in the bin, or when there's just a penalty.

"We'll find that right balance but the game is heading in the right direction of making sure we're looking after our player welfare not just for now but for players later in life."

not surprised, I think Cook bunged it on at one stage too. Bloody annoying really.

What's really annoying is when a ball carrier try's to get a penalty or six again on the first tackle when they have momentum, near the opposition try line.

In that situation, you know what bothers me? Nobody in defense is standing on the try line, they are all offside, and jumping off before the ball is played, and the refs do absolutely nothing. The whole policing of the offside is garbage. If the NRL want to get serious about policing the rules, they need to go back and look at this, because it's a mockery.

Totally agree Botany. They do it because they know they can get away with it.
