It doesn't seem to be about the money for Latrell with our latest contract offer (at least not directly anyway). He has rejected our offer because he wants a one or two year deal, Souths are pushing for a three or four year deal. When you think about this, it's pretty clear to see why. The salary cap will increase in the years after 2021 as the effects of Covid hopefully wear off, therefore, why would Latrell sign a four year deal when he could potentially be missing out because he is locked into a long-term, minimised salary cap deal? So yea, it's not really about the amount we've offered, it's just the length of the deal to ensure he gets his full value in years to come. I hope that makes sense.

Still, it is somewhat concerning of course. I will be absolutely gutted and fuming if he were to leave after this year.

However, at this stage, I'm not too worried. By all reports, Latrell absolutely loves the place. It's come straight from the horses mouth that he feels like he's been here forever and this is where he's meant to be. He even said in an interview a couple of days ago that he wants to stay here and hopes a deal will be done soon.

I hope so too, hopefully it'll all be sorted and Trell can continue his career in the mighty Red and Green.
Mate!! Its all about the money, your in lala land if u think its not, losing suuali then mitchel would be a cruel blow, and again i say this has alot to do with not having a dedicated chief exec who is a negotiator, ellison is more a team manager type and loyal but this dragging on has hurt us,like suualli we waited too long and others got in under us. This is a rediculous situation.

You obviously don't understand what I'm saying. Some on here are implying that he rejected our latest offer because of it's amount straight up. To me, it seems it is not the case.

Because the salary cap will hopefully go back to normal in the coming years, an $800k contract this year may become a $700k contract in 2022 or 2023 (in exaggeration). So by signing a long-term deal now, Trell is essentially selling himself short.

If this is the case, good on him for doing so. If he does indeed want to stay at the club and my reasoning is correct, then I think anyone would do the exact same in his situation.

A comment from a guy off another forum,

Not sure why people have problem with him wanting a shorter term contract, seems he is backing himself to have a big impact in the next few years and increase his value.

That can only be a positive for us as far as I’m concerned. Souths need to bring down his contract to two years and let him do his thing or lose him forever.

News Corp Australia Sports Newsroom

South Sydney’s star recruit Jai Arrow has suffered an injury setback as coach Wayne Bennett declared NSW Origin gun Cameron Murray had won the race for the Rabbitohs’ No. 13 jersey.

Arrow has missed three weeks of pre-season training at his new club after suffering a hamstring strain.

The former Gold Coast Titans gun is back in training now, but is out of the running for his favoured position at Redfern.

After suffering a hamstring injury in Game One of last November’s State of Origin series, Murray is on track to start the 2021 NRL season at lock for South Sydney.

Bennett flirted with playing Murray in the second row early last season before moving the workhorse back to his most dangerous position.

Arrow, 25, has joined the Rabbitohs this season on a four-year deal, but Bennett is yet to decide where to play the Queensland Origin representative after using him off the bench for the Maroons.

“Jai had an injury to his hammy, but it wasn’t serious,” Bennett said.

“He missed two or three weeks of training but he is back with us now and doing full training.

“He keeps telling us he is really happy at Souths and he seems to enjoy living in Sydney. He has settled in well.

“He’s a great guy, Jai, he is very sensible and a team oriented guy. He forms good relationships with his teammates.

“I haven’t decided where he will play. We have a few forwards jostling for positions.

“There is no doubt that Cameron Murray will be the 13 but Jai will be in the 17 somewhere. He has a lot to offer.”

Abdo - Kayo deal a win for fans as Telstra adjusts streaming approach: https://www.nrl.com/news/2021/02/02/kayo-partnership-a-win-for-fans-abdo/

From the Courier Mail,

Why Latrell is intrigued by the NRL’s ‘sleeping giant’

After rejecting Souths’ latest contract offer, Latrell Mitchell has become the most sought-after player in the NRL. A club he almost joined as a 16-year-old has entered the fray.

Latrell Mitchell has had talks with the Broncos as a staggering 12 NRL clubs enter the race for the signature of the South Sydney superstar.

News Corp can reveal Mitchell has been offered to the Broncos, with Brisbane coach Kevin Walters having held preliminary discussions with the management of the most in-demand player in the NRL.

It can also be revealed Mitchell has rejected a $2.4 million, three-year extension from the Rabbitohs.

The NSW Origin ace is seeking a shorter-term deal, prompting a revised strategic approach from the Rabbitohs, who remain confident they will retain Mitchell on a one or two-year contract.

But the contractual argy-bargy has opened the door for a slew of NRL rivals headlined by the Broncos, the very club Mitchell almost joined as a 16-year-old growing up in Taree.

Mitchell is off-contract at season’s end and the Broncos are one of the NRL’s most cashed-up clubs under the salary cap, possessing a $5 million war chest as 13 top-liners, such as Anthony Milford and Alex Glenn, fight for new deals for 2022.

The Rabbitohs are hopeful of announcing Mitchell’s retention in the next fortnight, but that hasn’t stopped the 23-year-old exploring all options, which includes dialogue with Broncos bosses just before Christmas.

“I can confirm we’ve had some discussions with the Broncos,” said a spokesman for Mitchell’s management team.

“We spoke just prior to Christmas.

“At this stage, despite reports Latrell is a done deal at Souths, we haven’t finalised anything.

“Souths have tried to put a deal together that will reflect Latrell’s market value, but we’ve made it clear we aren’t looking for a long-term deal.

“Our preference is for Latrell to sign a one or two-year contract, but at the moment we haven’t committed to any deal with Souths, so Latrell will continue to explore his options.”

The classy strike-weapon has a history with the Broncos.

As a teenager, he explored the Broncos set-up in 2013, meeting the likes of then Brisbane stars Sam Thaiday and Justin Hodges, with a view to enrolling at Wavell High, the Brisbane school NRL legend Greg Inglis attended at 17.

Mitchell ultimately joined the Sydney Roosters due to the closer proximity to his family in Taree compared to a life in Queensland.

The Broncos have lacked a match-winning fullback for the past three seasons, but they may struggle to afford Mitchell as they look to stave off poaching raids for off-contract strike centre Kotoni Staggs.

“If we can’t do a deal with Souths, there is genuine interest in the Broncos,” Mitchell’s representative said.

“They are one of the biggest brands in the game and Latrell almost joined them as a teenager.

“Souths are a great club but there’s no doubt the Broncos are a massive brand.

“When they aren’t on top of the NRL, they are a sleeping giant and it is only a matter of time before they bounce back again. The Broncos are arguably the biggest brand in Australian sport.

“We’ve had expressions of interest from just about every club in the game. Now we will see where things land.”

Brisbane coach Walters was tight-lipped when asked about the prospect of Mitchell joining the Broncos.

“Our recruitment-and-retention committee has made a decision not to speak about any potential signings,” Walters said.

“I can’t comment on this one, we’re playing cards closer to our chests this season.”

Souths coach Wayne Bennett is hopeful Mitchell will remain loyal after his arrival at the Rabbitohs from arch-rivals the Roosters last season.

“Latrell is happy at Souths and we are really happy with him, so we’re hoping he will stay,” he said.

“We’re still negotiating but I hope he stays, Latrell is great to have around the club.”

“We’ve had expressions of interest from just about every club in the game. Now we will see where things land.”

mmm there was not EOI from the Roosters - i reckon he will be heading North - Brisbane Bronco's or the second Brisbane team in 2023 - Bronco's will be first choice

The cap has been cut for 2021 and 2022 - there is no way the NRL will get a broadcasting rights deal payment as they did for this one - FTA is struggling due to decreases in viewers and the affect this has on revenue from advertisers

The key part of the deal will see the cap drop from $9.6 million to $9.024 million for 2021, and then from $9.7 million to $9.11 million for 2022.

The next collective bargaining agreement is due to start in 2023.

I predict Mitchell will be heading North - Brisbane Broncos in 2022 1st choice or Brisbane second team 2023- it's a sure thing - play 1 or 2 more seasons for Souths only. Bennett will be the Brisbane 2nd team coach for certain - be spending 2022 recruiting players for 2023.

I hear Brandon Smith keen to move if Cameron Smith stays at Storm. Would love to have Brandon as the final signing. His power, creativity and versatility would make us hard to beat.

Cam Smith wants to challenge that Japanese Football player who is playing his 35th year aged 53 as a professional player alas though he isn't the oldest - there is a 75 year old professional player in Egypt
