BENJI’S BUNNIES GUARANTEE

Souths are looking at Benji as an ideal No.14.Source: News Corp Australia

New South Sydney recruit Benji Marshall has been guaranteed he’ll be in the Bunnies best 17 to start the season with the Rabbitohs to use the Kiwi champion as a utility on the interchange bench.

With the new adjustments to the rules - especially the six-again for being inside the 10m and a handover for an incorrect play-the-ball - the NRL is tipped to become a fraction of a second quicker once again.

The Bunnies believe Marshall could be the perfect no.14 and have got a spot available following the departure of Corey Allan to Canterbury-Bankstown.

With the acquisitions of Jai Arrow, Josh Mansour and Marshall over the off-season, South Sydney have genuine reason to believe they can go all the way this year.

A comment from another forum, this is bloody awesome news if true!

Spoke to Latrells aunty today, not some cousins cousin this is a direct relative that goes up and stays on his property etc, they speak regularly. Lats has signed a 2 year extension will be announced soon according to my connect.

I’m an Aboriginal identified recruitment consultant, couldn’t tell you how many Carr’s, Goolagong’s, Mundine’s, i have on my caseload, you build relations with these guys and you start talking. JAC mail was extremely strong from the community that he was coming to us, no clue what happened with that though i guess shit changes, idk any agents or anyone at South Sydney.

I trust the Lats connection though, won’t say it’s factual but if it doesn’t come about something drastically has gone wrong and it’d be a backflip.

BENNETT HITS SNOOZE ON FUTURE PLANS

Supercoach Wayne Bennett is in no hurry to make a call about his coaching future beyond this year with the seven-time premiership-winner guaranteed to have multiple options.

The South Sydney Rabbitohs have told Bennett he can have whatever title he likes to remain on the books at Redfern in a consultancy and mentoring capacity.

Even at the age of 71, Bennett is still guaranteed to be targeted by the new Brisbane Jets franchise or whatever second Brisbane team wins the license to be the NRL’s 17th team.

“As usual I’ll be coaching 15 other teams by halfway through the year,” Bennett joked.

“All I’m worried about this year is South Sydney, I owe that to the club. They’ve been very good to me and that’s why I decided I didn’t want to be involved in State of Origin this year.

“Souths are my focus and I’ll worry about all the rest of it later on.”

This is where I reckon Souths recruitment nailed it. Corey Allan would've wanted a decent upgrade after playing origin and he was probably going to be playing number 14 again. Bennett loves his utility on the bench.

In comes Benji Marshall desperate to continue playing and signs a cut price deal with Souths. This is genius. We get a player who can create magic on the field as a utility playing against tired forward packs teaming up with walker, cook, latrell and Reynolds. Souths played this so well in my opinion. Lose Allan and gain Benji Marshall for less money.

From the Daily Telegraph,

The South Sydney Rabbitohs are locked in delicate negotiations with halfback and skipper Adam Reynolds, who is off contract at the end of the 2021 season.

The 2014 premiership-winning halfback and best goalkicker in the competition wants to play out his career at the Rabbitohs as a proud one-club player, but the Souths local junior has been asked to take a significant pay cut.

Souths have a minor problem … there is a queue of rival NRL clubs who are monitoring the Reynolds situation closely.

In fairness to the club, when Reynolds signed his last deal four years ago, the Rabbitohs didn’t have such a galaxy of stars.

They now have Latrell Mitchell, Cody Walker, Cameron Murray, Damien Cook, Dane Gagai, Jai Arrow and Thomas Burgess on the big bucks, and they all have to be squeezed into the cap.

The 30-year-old can play for at least another four years and will be swamped with offers from rival clubs if the Rabbitohs negotiations break down.

He is one of four experienced halfbacks on the NRL open market at the end of the season alongside Parramatta playmaker Mitchell Moses, Melbourne Storm’s Jahrome Hughes and Newcastle Knights star Mitchell Pearce.

Interestingly, the Reynolds issue is not one for Wayne Bennett to sort out as Jason Demetriou takes over as head coach at the end of the season and is now involved in the recruitment decisions.

In a perfect world, Gags would make a sacrifice and take a pay cut too. Who knows if that'll happen though?
Its supply and demand, if other clubs are offering bigger money a reduction is like a slap in the face, there were reports earlier that gagai was in demand, and many suggesting AR is in huge demand, do u let them go?
This BS about a 2nd brisbane team in an environment were i dont see much emerging talent, that will force up prices and weaken teams will disrupt the whole game. Its hard enough enticing qld based players , now it will be impossible

That is true for a lot of players but in some cases, it's not. For example, I see Reyno as the kind of guy that would quite happily take a pay cut to stay at the club and benefit the club. I don't think he'd ever play for anyone else. The jury is still out on if Gags would choose loyalty over cash but time will tell, I'd love it if he did.

I'll be voting for Sutto no doubt and hoping that him and Te'o get the second row spots. Sam, in my opinion, played his best footy at lock for us so I'd pick him there with Murray hopefully picking up a bench spot.

Very much this. As long as we didn't try to lowball him, Reyno will work with us to make sure he stays on.

That's the key, it needs to be a respectful offer. Reyno is an elite player, perhaps one of Souths' greatest halves of all time and our current captain. He deserves a fair amount of coin still so it's a matter of finding that balance between pay cut and fair offer.

I’m a massive Renno fan and if Brooks fails this year, now that we have most of our forwards set and some cash, I wouldn’t be surprised if Hartigan ( our recruitment chief) asks Madge to pick up the phone ( if he hasn’t already).

He’s as Marquee as it gets.

That he’s still up there near his peak is problematic for you because he can command a massive deal and we all know he is a licensed game-changer. One of the last of the great halves, full control of the game player, amazing boot and the rest.

I’d argue he is about your best player and you will need to dip into the old dusty wallet!

I think he’s better than Cody, Latrell, Cook...just about everyone except maybe Murray, because Murray is surreal.

He has to be priority 1.

You won't get any argument from me there. I've long thought he's our best and most important player (even when GI and Sam were here).

Yes, JR theres a truly compelling case for what you say.

I think he came in after Sandow who was beyond electric at the time, but all reports of Rennos early days was that he was going to be much better than Chris ....and that transpired.

That game v sgi in the finals 2018 was one of the great footy performances by a half back. He tore sgi apart, Hunt has never been the same! Even better than Cody’s remarkable game v knights.

Age has not diminished him either. He just about does everything better than he did 5 years ago. A fraction slower, but a better passer. A gold plated kicker. He’s critical.

I think a good offer would be to keep him -not just reward for service. Clubs salivate over Reynolds because he’s got plenty left. More than plenty.

He’s still at the height of his powers. He’s the model halfback. One of the last we will see as the game devolves into tip. He’s got that old Steve Mortimer or Sterlo feel about him. A Ben Hunt or Mitchell Moses without the baggage.

He’s tough too and lives for footy and not the lair life.

There are so many sides with dodgy halves these days. Only a few sides with competent and consistent performers. I thought Cody struggled for awhile but he’s excelled beyond reason!

Even Manly have to drag Foran back and no one remembers his last game when the bloke didn’t sustain a life threatening injury or a relationship crisis!

Count your lucky stars you have marquee halves!
