Disappointed in the Melbourne numbers. When will that city embrace the Storm? They are the premiership winners, win 50-0 and are full of personalities like Munster, Cheers and Addo Carr but it is put on the back channel of 9GEM. Seemingly Rugby League will never get a foothold in Melbourne, no matter how good a team they are.

Put them on the main channel, that's the only way it will grow. No one watches anything on digital channels. id suggest 38k is probably one of the most watched things on a digital channel. We are stuck in a classic chicken and egg. CH9 doesnt want to put them on main channel as audiences are small, audiences are small as Ch9 put them on digital channel. The GF and Origin ratings in Melbourne should give a sense of what is possible. Its same in Perth and Adelaide, and even more so given the total lack of NRL presence in those cities. We also have to remember how badly NRL has been treated by Ch9 in those cities. It wasnt that long ago the games were on replay at midnight and removed if a golf tournament was on. This drove RL fans to Fox and more recently KAyo who now have a bigger metro market share than FTA. Be interesting to see those breakdowns by city. I haven't watch an NRL game on Nine for 15 years!

The Storm are the best rating PTV side in the NRL. So I think its pretty save to say they would have picked up another40-50 k on Fox.

The ratings will never grow whilst it is shown on a secondary channel, simple as that. Also the storm are essentially the highest rating team on fox (and I’ll guess Kayo as well) and I dare say that’s where the Melbourne viewers go.

The ch9 commentary is f**king awful so I can only see this trend continuing.

How come afl get to have two games on at same time on fox yet they insist every nrl game is in a seperate time slot? Means they can avoid playing Thursday nights and have more fan friendly game times.

its a choice the AFl makes, the broadcaster would rather the high rating Thursday nights, and sunday nights and not have the cross overs. This combined with the simulcasting of all non victorian teams games into their home markets is a bit of a problem for fox, and the AFL would take a financial hit for it,

On top of all that, Mclachlan stated a few years back when the league abandoned Monday night and Sunday night fixtures, that the AFL wants to keep its attendance culture intact, and fans clearly didnt want these timeslots for attendance.

This is a trap that we all fall into sometimes - the AFL ratings for Grand Finals in Sydney and Brisbane are generally pretty high too. The issue is assuming that these ratings are a reflection of more general support for the regular league - outside of their "home" states, these events are also watched by "theatre" fans - the same who tune in for Socceroos matches, the Bledisloe Cup, the Olympics and the Melbourne Cup - while normal ratings for their regular seasons are rather much lower.

That theres a lot of room for growth is absolutely true though

Out of curiosity, how did the rugger final rate ?
https://www.smh.com.au/sport/rugby-...ttered-brumbies-seething-20210509-p57qa1.html

Rugby Australia are also celebrating a 232 per cent surge in its grand final viewership compared to last year’s Super Rugby AU decider.

An average audience of 285,000 people watched the Reds beat the Brumbies and more than 464,000 watched the thrilling final minutes.

Sources with knowledge of the viewership figures said more than 100,000 people watched the match on Stan Sport.

The combined Nine and Stan Sport viewership makes it the most watched Super Rugby match since the Reds’ 2011 grand final win against the Crusaders and eclipsed the 2014 grand final, when 375,000 watched the Waratahs beat the Crusaders.
