With a strong emphasis placed on being a development club, Tweed Seagulls Auswide Bank Mal Meninga Cup coach Tim Maccan knows it’s about much more than just what happens on the field for the young men who play the game.

With his side vying for three consecutive titles, Maccan knows outsiders will again expect the under 18s to push for the Cup, but for the Palm Beach Currumbin High teacher, the whole program is about much more than that.

They may be new to the Harvey Norman Under 19 Girls competition, but the Norths Devils team have plenty of experience to draw from when they take to the field this Saturday for their first ever game.

Head coach Shane Morris has worked for years in developing players and the side also have former Queensland representative (QRP #75) Deanna Turner serving as a coach and mentor with the team.

The Auswide Bank Mal Meninga Cup season was scheduled to kick off with three games last weekend, but by the time Sunday was over, only one game was played with Tweed Seagulls and Souths Logan Magpies fighting it out in the rain at Tugun on Saturday.

The Magpies kicked off their season with a 30-18 win over the defending premiers and it is that kind of form coach Karmichael Hunt will be looking to take into this week’s match against Burleigh Bears.

The Northern Pride Harvey Norman Under 19 team are a shining example of the positive outcomes that can be achieved when a club unites around a common goal.

The team were tested by their opposition last weekend, going down in a tough game to Townsville Blackhawks in great ‘local’ derby and while the result wasn’t what the team had trained for, coach Flori King-Smith was proud of the performance and could not fault the effort, especially in defence.

Sunshine Coast Falcons will be looking to take their second half performance from Round 2 against Wide Bay Bulls in Kingaroy as inspiration for their whole game in Round 3 when they host Ipswich Jets in their Cyril Connell Challenge match this weekend.

The Falcons didn’t get the start they were after last weekend, with only 46 per cent of the ball. Their 50 per cent completion rate also meant the Falcons ended up having to do 35 more tackles that their opposition.
