That article really is excellent. The viewing hours differential really must make a difference to the potential for each game to negotiate with networks. I’m strongly against moving to quarters though. Kills the games momentum.

Which why don't go to quarters, Work on the push to the US. Especially as they have been given a World Cup, Any deal done to US channels will make up for the short fall that less advertisement brings in

On FTA in Melbourne

In Melbourne, the NRL averaged 14,000 on Nine/Gem through the season with the top rating game being round 22s Panthers/Storm with 60,000. In all the secondary NRL cities, the NRL averaged a combined 29,000 for the season with #1 being the Panthers/Storm in R19 averaging 81,000

In Sydney, the citys AFL FTA average was 28,000 per game. Matches involving the Swans averaging 51,000 per game on 7/7mate, while the Giants again struggled for audience, pulling in 24,000 viewers per game on FTA.

In Brisbane, the city average for the AFL season on FTA was just 27,000. Matches involving Brisbane averaged 43,000, while the Suns averaged 23,000 per game

In Melbourne, the city average for 2022 was 223,000 - the top 10 games rated 300k or higher. 5 clubs – Dees, Pies, Dogs, Blues and Tigers beat the 223k average mark. The average is bought down by North Melbournes lone Melbourne broadcast game audience of 83,000. North were the lowest rating team of the season, but hardly any FTA.

Yet in another thread, people got cut I called Storm a side with a niche following. Like AFL in NSW/QLD it very much is

negotiated separately until recently - but yes as said there are some national broadcast partners for the NRL
Won't the "national broadcast partners" be where the big bucks are?

I still question the relevance of the posted article on regional advertising to NRL coverage. It mentions goods on supermarket shelves. The bulk of ads promoting these won't be specific to regional areas. All the associated costs will show up as national or international spend.

BTW, is there anything in the argument that with so much ad revenue now being funnelled to California, this shifts the focus in English-speaking countries from national to local?

There's a Newcastle v South Sydney game in this table of Storm ratings.

Random Souths fan strikes again.

They go with the broadcast, not necessarily in the advertising breaks between play or half time. Those were not previously negotiated nationally and at differing rates.

Many if not most ads are advertised regionally, not nationally. Even an ad for national brands can vary between regions and cities.

Not really, Ch7 are broke
Ch10 useless
ABC and SBS no money

The Great Hope lies with Paramount/Ten being able to convince someone they can do the job. They've got a couple of years to convince the NRL, with AFL and Cricket now out of the picture.

It’s about streaming giants ie Netflix google Amazon having to buy or make Australian content

This may or may not include sport. Im not sure.

The standard requires all commercial free-to-air television licensees to broadcast an annual minimum transmission quota of 55 per cent Australian programming between 6 am and midnight. Commercial broadcasters are also required to provide at least 1460 hours of Australian programming on their non-primary channels each year. In addition, there are specific minimum annual sub-quotas for first-run Australian adult drama, documentary and children’s programs.

If it does include sport then it’s massive

Once again Storm don’t have niche following, by RL, and most professional, sports in Australia, standards they have a major following.
What does have a niche following in melbourne is rugby league, and that’s on the pathetic investments and not holding fta partners accountable the arlc has made in the sport in Victoria over the last 30 years.

but still 1.1million plus finals and origin fta total viewing audience in Australia's soon to be major city isn’t to be sniffed at Id suggest,

Nearly wrote a positive post but had to fall into the negative space as always

Not sure if youve seen much regional tv but from what I’ve seen it’s ads for tractors and colour bond sheeting with the local curry house thrown in. It’s not for national companies who may have very few outlets, if any, in those markets. Hence why 90% of advertising is spent in metro markets where these big brands have outlets Despite the 70/30 population split. How many Harvey Normans are in regional australia compared to metro cities for example?

I live in a regional market and guess what? You are wrong as usual. I suppose being the resident expert in everything does have its pitfalls. You just make stuff up to suit your anti ARLC agenda. The advertising in regional markets certainly differs but it’s nowhere as localised as you suggest. And yes we do have national companies based in our quaint little hovels and even the odd Harvey Norman god bless us!

They have had the most dominate team for last 20 years and no traction

It’s a shame a lot of the recent successful nrl clubs are the storm and roosters who aren’t hugely popular

manly too

so many comps over ten plus years won by the less popular sides

You can add Penrith to that list, too.

I'm talking popularity. Theyre a fart in the wind compared to the likes of Dragons, Eels etc.
