With the sheer number of players being rested, would the NRL have any grounds to issue Penrith a show cause for deliberately degrading the product? Channel 9 could certainly be within their grounds to complain also.

its going back 25 years but Easts were ordered by the ARL to change their named team after picking basically a reserve grade side for the final round given their finals spot was assured.
You have a 30 man squad. You must pick your side from that squad or else seek an exemption which I guarantee would not be forthcoming in this situation. Are there any other rules covering the selection of teams?

honestly I have no idea. I don’t think they would have rules specifying that you must pick your best players, but I would imagine if teams just decided to start resting their stars for 6-7 games per year the NRL would eventually have something to say since it damages the product.

personally I think the panthers are doing the right thing and have earned the right to effectively an extra bye after such a strong season. But I bet The NRL360 goons jump on it

A bit of a strange decision from Cleary IMO naming that side for the reasons I have stated previously.

Especially since he could have made 5 changes prior to the 24 hour cutoff in the event Parra win which would have enabled him to not name a few players and then bring out 5 others if it becomes a dead rubber.

Now he can't play any of them and could well be on a collision course with storm week 1 which is a scenario they could have changed.

I'd imagine he's considered this. The last team to avoid the Storm got their head handed to them in pretty short order, that being the 2020 Roosters in letting Souths win in the last round. Any team that wins this premiership will have to face Storm, Roosters, and Panthers. You might get lucky and avoid one of them but you can't avoid them all. Better in my view as the leader of a team not to display fear of any team.

The Panthers won't be the Storm's preferred week 1 opponent either I don't suppose, but they won't avoid them either.

with the rest - id back Penrith to beat Melbourne or Parramatta at home, especially that they play each other tomorrow night for the second chance - so it will be a high intensity game.

personally I think Luai and Fish dont need another week off, they've had their rest recently, so they should be in better shape then those being rested.

Well I don't believe the roosters "let" souths win that game. Sure, they weren't fussed about losing but they were well beaten on the day.

The difference being of course that us losing meant avoiding the storm as opposed to Penrith winning potentially meaning they avoid the storm and they have not given themselves a realistic chance of doing so. I don't think giving yourselves a chance to win a game and control who your opponent is, is a display of fear.

I’m disappointed that we are resting so many; I just think that winning is a habit. But I trust the coach.

I do think there is an element of confidence in the decision; it’s saying that as long as we are fit, we are confident we can beat anyone Week 1 of the Finals.
Taylan May has been found guilty of a malicious assault that happened last October. Why was he allowed to play this season.

Why would we be concerned about playing the Storm week 1? We're going have to beat them eventually, may as well do it on our home track.

Because the no fault stand down policy only applies to the absolute worst crimes carrying 11+ years behind bars. Or in special circumstances as the NRL sees fit (ie. domestic violence)

Grabbing a guy who had been harassing his teammates all night by his collar and bringing him to the ground is hardly going to see a player miss the season. They let Storm players do worse than that on the field without punishment.

Be interesting to see if the NRL do punish him now though. They were made aware of the incident last year and had seen the footage and it was dealt with behind closed doors back then. But now that it's finals time and in the media again, I can see them handing out another punishment.

That is how I see it too, Best chance to beat anyone is Round 1. Rested up and at home

Won't be long before Easts are winning the MP by a stretch, then you'll have the luxury of doing the same.
